 Let's compare it against the Sigma 24-105 f4 EF Canon EF DSLR lens. Why not the Canon 24-105 f4 because we never liked that lens. We tested it against the Sigma and we decided we were going to use the Sigma instead so we don't happen to own it. The Sigma here is better than the Canon so if you have the Canon and you're thinking about upgrading and getting that new kit lens it'll give you some idea

 So that's the kind of thing that makes your life much easier like this shot here at half a second handheld and you can see everything turned out really sharp. So that means sometimes it can get dark and you don't need to carry a tripod and that's really really valuable. We have tested the Canon 24-105 DSLR lens and the image stabilization was nowhere near this good. So they've really improved that making it sort of the ultimate in versatility

 The lens itself is much more contrasty that means the lens elements are not bouncing light all around inside it has special magical coatings that keep the light heading on as straight a path as possible that increases contrast but also increases your perception of sharpness in the image and that's part of why that lens ends up looking just so really really great. I'm showing it at 105 millimeters the differences were less at 24 millimeters but nonetheless they were still visible. What about the amazing Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L lens this has kind of been our benchmark in the the DSLR world so let's see how it compares against that and much less expensive stabilized lens

The good: great range and an excellent kit lens that works well for many settings that are well lit. The bad: product has rather poor contrast and low light performance. Conclusion: The build quality is great but the lens is slow. The zoom range is perfect for well lit portrait subjects and ideal with supplemental lighting

 Hi, I'm Dustin Abbott and I'm here today to give you another in my series of long-term reviews and this is of the lens that actually was the first lens that I reviewed when Canon released its new Canon RF mount and its first full-frame mirrorless camera, the original Canon EOS R and that is the Canon RF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM lens. This lens, this particular focal length has always been an important one for Canon's more kind of professional grade, we'll call it a kit lens, though it's not a kit lens in the traditional sense of being an inexpensive lens that tends to be bundled with cameras. In this case it's a more premium lens that happens to be bundled with some of Canon's better cameras. And as such it is one of the most popular lenses in the L series, if not the most popular, and it's a lens that a lot of people are going to have some experience with

 I wouldn't want this to be my only lens because I'm a spoiled brat but if you did have to have just one lens you know there's a reason why Canon sells this lens in kit with you know some of their their bodies because it's a lens that allows you to just with that one lens do a large variety of different photography purposes and holds up quite well in the process. So at the end of the day while I hate to see a price of legacy lenses and this is not a legacy lens at this point but it's not a new lens it's four years old at this point I hate to see that price point creep up as we've seen across the board with Canon lenses but that's the reality of the day in which we live and so it's price point at about 1300 US dollars is a little bit higher than what I'd like however I will say that it's a lens that has held up well and obviously still does the job even on higher resolution bodies and so if you need a jack of all trade lens for your Canon RF mount body I don't really know that there is a better choice the you know the top alternative is going to be something like the 24-70mm f2 LIS which is a very good lens it's also significantly more expensive and there's always going to be that challenge of do I prefer the faster maximum aperture or the bigger zoom range and ultimately that's a question that you and your wallet are going to have to answer. So outside of a few of the typical flaws of lenses that go from you know fairly wide to telephoto range I think that the image quality holds up fairly good here certainly for just kind of the standard everyday use when I'm not pixel peeping as long as I'm not shooting really really up close where sometimes I see that lack of contrast I actually feel like images look quite good and contrast looks good images have nice pop to them and of course Canon does do a really good job with color and their L series lenses tend to be uniformly quite good in color rendition and color neutrality and so I think that that's definitely true of this lens making it a very useful lens because again it is a jack of all trades it allows you to do pretty much everything and do it all reasonably well.  Because we don't have any of those, there's still a really big hole that a lens like the 24-105mm f4L is going to fill that very few other lenses do. I wanted to share this image because it's shot at f8 and just to show you how that the bokeh circles are staying really nice and circular so the aperture is doing a good job of maintaining a circular shape even when stopped down two full stops to f8 here. Now a fairly typical strength I find for Canon's better lenses and of course Canon sensors is really good color with good saturation levels but without a tend towards garishness and so here I think that you can see that colors overall they're deeply saturated but they look very very natural and that is a strength for the lens. So obviously an application for this lens is going to be to use it for portraits and you can see here we've got good focus on the eye and looks good I mean it's not off the off the charts sharp here but the overall look of the image is nice the bokeh quality is nice stepping back to more of a full length type portrait again you know good focus and detail on the eyes and even though here there's more of the bokeh that's in what you would call the transition zone where it tends to be a little bit more jittery there is some outlining there but in general I think that the quality of the image is pretty good with a fairly good three dimensional effect on our subject even though this is just using available light

Focus issues

 The mirrorless RF lens seemed to be just a tiny bit sharper at 105mm, but the differences were so slight as to be basically attributable to human error or manufacturing variation. Alright then, let's look at distortion and vignetting. This is taken care of by in-camera corrections, but I like to see how lenses perform behind all of that. Mirrorless camera manufacturers have a very bad habit of underdesigning their lenses in this area and letting your camera just correct everything at the detriment of image quality, but Canon have done a better job than usual here

 This is a full frame lens, and at the moment, Canon's EOS R system is exclusively made up of full frame cameras. If you're buying this lens on its own, then it's on the expensive side. At the time of this review, it's $900 in the US, but over £1000 here in the UK. Last time I checked, the pound was worth more than a dollar

 There's a tiny improvement at f5.6, and a more noticeable one at f8. So, overall, this zoom lens is a pretty consistent performer really, always very sharp in the middle, and generally pretty good in the corners. I also tested my older EF 24-105mm L lens using Canon's EF mount adapter on the same camera at the same time, and the two results were essentially about the same

 This is taken care of by in-camera corrections, but I like to see how lenses perform behind all of that. At the widest angle of 24mm, barrel distortion is moderate, but not too strong. The corners look a little dark at f4, stop down to f5

) Auto focus is fast and relatively silent. No complaints at all.  In terms of image quality, the RF 24-105 F4 L is arguably the best zoom available with this zoom range. The Sony 24-105 F4 is close and may be better in some respects

 It is consistently sharp in the center across its zoom range. It is noticeably less so in the corners. This comes with the territory when designing a 24-105 lens so it is hard to complain too much. The RF is at least as good, if not better, than the competition in this respect

  In terms of image quality, the RF 24-105 F4 L is arguably the best zoom available with this zoom range. The Sony 24-105 F4 is close and may be better in some respects. The Nikon F-mount equivalent is not close though there is a Z-mount 24-105 on Nikon's roadmap that is likely to be very good when it is eventually released.  That said, the RF 24-105 F4 L is not perfect

  The bottom line is that the RF 24-105 is a good lens that I do recommend but it falls just a little short of the image quality I'm getting from my other RF L-Series zooms. Overall, Canon is to be commended for their lightweight F4 L series of lenses that combine a relatively small, lightweight form factor with high IQ. For whatever reason, other manufacturers (some more than others) seem unwilling or unable to maintain a commitment to top quality optics in a zoom that isn't F2.8

Good lens. Don't buy from Amazon.

 This also means you won't be getting particularly out of focus backgrounds in your pictures, the lens gives you a pretty flat, two dimensional shooting experience considering you're shooting on full frame. Still, that's not a problem for, say, landscape photography, where this lens's portability might make it a good option. Well, that's enough of my yakking, let's look at the lens in question. As I've mentioned, considering its great zoom range, it's small and lightweight, at under 400 grams

 I've come to see that this lens has a lot going both for and against it. It's small and light, simple to use and not too pricey, it's got great image stabilisation and a brilliant zoom range for a standard kit lens, and those are all great things. But I can't decide which is the biggest black mark against it. Its very disappointing image quality at wide angles, or its very dark maximum aperture, which will put a real damper on shooting effectively indoors, or indeed in any kind of darker situation

Now, something I've been longing to see on Canon's new EOS R cameras are more lower-budget lenses which are affordable to normal human beings, so I'm pleased to present a review of a new, lower-cost standard zoom lens that's just coming out now, their RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM. It is only for Canon's mirrorless EOS R cameras, and it costs £450 in the UK, but only $400 in the US, so it's potentially good value for money in America

Excellent but pricey

 So, let's just get into it. This lens right here, the 24-105, I think I picked this up with my RF6. I can't remember which one I bought it with. But, or maybe I just bought it randomly

0 L lens. And this one, there's just a couple things that I really love about this one quite a bit more. One is the size of it. It's pretty small compared to the other one

 And I just really appreciate being able to just zoom out and get that whole length. The other thing that I really love about this, like I said earlier, this is the cheapest L series lens that you're gonna find. It has that red ring of power. And I just really love the quality that they put into these L series lenses

The Most Underrated Lens RF 24-105mm F4.0L IS USM | EOS R6

This lens does seem to be a moderate improvement over it's EF mount cousin. One of my goals was to try to get the heft and weight down as much as possible from my previous kit of 1DX bodies. Not having to use the lens mount adapter reduces both weight and size. Typical of wide to short tele lenses, it has some imperfections that will be noticed mostly by the fanatic pixel peepers, but for 99% of the photography this lens will see, it is outstanding

So far a step up from the EF version
