 Of course there was more treble in my translation of what I heard from the Audiziz LCD4 where that headphone tends to have a little bit more of a treble roll off compared to the Ether. So in my book, and this is just from my experience, Audiziz tends to have a little bit less in the treble. Hi-Fi Man tends to have a little bit more energy in the treble and Dan Clark Audio, like the Ether too, tends to hit it just right. It's kind of that Goldilocks syndrome

 We got a chance to sit down with this system listening to our Quest Style amplifier and our Vega along with our QLN Signature 3 loudspeakers just for fun in the background here. All wired up with AudioQuest cabling. This is a premium headphone with a planar magnetic technology that retails for $2,300 but through October will be $2,200 for all three ear pads. We listened to this with a bunch of different headphones to kind of give you a good comparison and I think the number one thing I'd like to say about this headphone at the upper range of planar magnetic technology is that it has a very open-ended top end

 Hi-Fi Man tends to have a little bit more energy in the treble and Dan Clark Audio, like the Ether too, tends to hit it just right. It's kind of that Goldilocks syndrome. I like the overall signature of this headphone. I think it's a nice neutral sound that lands in a less controversial area than some other headphones that might be more quote unquote fun or clinical or dry and kind of these scrapes for more detail

 So an excellent specimen for this price point, for this range. The three included pads on the system do augment the sound just a little bit. They either tighten up the bass, add a little more damping or kind of just tweak things a little bit. They're not a huge change from pad to pad, but will give you kind of a way to fine tune your system and are quite fun to try out if you want to try different things, mix it up

DCA Ether 2 Headphone System Reviewed

I’m looking at the HD800s and the HD820.

Here’s the catch, I know someone that owns both of these and they want to get rid of them. They will sell me the HD800s for 1100$ and the HD820 for 1200$. 

The HD800s are close enough to the Arya to where I’m comfortable going with the aesthetics of it over the Arya. It just suits me better. I do value less leakage considering I will be touring soon. The HD820 are closed back and what I can assume is that most people next to me can hear the sound coming from the HD800s opposed to the HD820. I don’t want to be annoying while sitting next to people listening to my progressions while they try and create new riffs.
Also, I will use these for both music production and music enjoyment. 

While I value less leakage, I don’t value less leakage over the overall quality of the product and the sound quality. I’d sit nearby on a tourbus. Busses are loud and they are my friends, i just hate to be ‘that guy’ that has loudass headphones lol. Maybe i’m wrong and they both don’t make much of a difference in leakage and it’s not as much as I think, i’m not sure. You guys know a lot more than me when it comes to this so i’m turning to you.

Whatever you recommend, I will follow. These are my endgame ones. I’ve searched far and wide and considering a guy I know will sell them to me for 1k less, i’m gonna pick one of the two.

Well, MrSpeakers’ latest top-of-the-line headphones, the Ether 2, have given me a handy opportunity to explain the notion of high-resolution (or high-definition) sound and why, despite many companies abusing the term, it’s not mere marketing speak. True high-res audio is an example of the thing that attracts us to follow the progress of personal technology: turning technical and engineering advances into a pleasurable experience. It doesn’t come cheap, and you’ll have to swallow hard to get over the $1,999.99 Ether 2 asking price, but after weeks of testing these headphones, I can tell you with certainty that they deliver something you won’t get anywhere else

 MrSpeakers has achieved a level of comfort and build quality that really speaks to the luxury price of the product. And as usual for the company, there’s a contoured carrying case for storing and transporting the Ether 2s.

Here’s why I find the MrSpeakers Ether 2s exceptional on this front. Their resolution is so damn exemplary that I initially thought they had a fault. Listening to music with them, I’d hear peculiar buzzing noises and ringing and imperfections that seemed to be missing from other headphones. I tried using a different cable (MrSpeakers is good about using the same connector across all of its headphone models to date) and different sound sources, and those little flaws and resonances were still there

Clark plugged them into his office setup, listened to the offending tracks, then flipped the left and right channels by plugging the cables into the “wrong” ear cup, and, sure enough, I heard the flaws in the music switch sides

A luxury price demands luxury build quality and performance, and MrSpeakers delivers on all fronts

 But you would be wrong. This thing is entirely metal, with titanium, aluminum, and carbon fiber. So you've got this Dan Clark's patented Ni-Tynol memory metal headband, which keeps its shape really nicely and will bounce back if bent. You've got this sort of webbed head strap, which is designed to keep your head cool because nobody wants a sweaty head during their listening sessions

 You've got this neat spiderweb design on the baffles, and it's a monochromatic look, simple, but cool looking and impactful, and we'll bang it against the head from the stand. And then, okay. It's pretty cool looking. The ear pads are super, super cushy

 For me, it's a nice pairing. When I listen to the Ether 2, it's as if I'm lounging under a soft fleece blanket on a cozy chair in a dimly lit room. I can really lose myself in the sound. The Ether 2 has rich bass, smooth mids, and relaxed highs

I won't lie: aesthetics have played a role in some of the gear I own. It's not a replacement for performance, but if I'm deciding between two similar items and one clearly looks better than the other, well that settles that. With that in mind, here's some of my selections:

JDS Labs El Amp II: K N O B  L I F E. An absolutely stunning solid state amplifier with respectable power and the greatest knob ever fitted to a headphone amp. Mine is not engraved, but you can get an engraving to make yours personal.

Feliks Audio Echo: a tube amp that is gorgeous and built to a wonderfully high standard.

Dan Clark Audio Ether 2: I was looking at different high-end planars in the $1000-1500 range, and found a pair on eBay. They are super lightweight and comfortable, and look incredible - the spiderweb cup design looks awesome.

Master & Dynamic MH40: M&D headphones are gorgeous, there's no denying it. I don't love the way these sound - I'd call them v-shaped, but it's more like a Nike swoosh emphasizing the bass. They can be pretty good for portable use though, as background noise can drown out some of the bass and bring the sound signature back to reasonable.

There are, of course, other aesthetically pleasing equipment options out there - plenty of tube amps look awesome, ZMF looks gorgeous, and everybody has different tastes, so you might not like the look of something where I do. Those are just some of the pieces of equipment I own that I happen to like the look of.

There are several companies selling headphones at or around the $2k price and all have different strengths. I opted for these over the others for several reasons (below) and have not been disappointed. Among The Best At This Price Point

 I started listening first with the perforated pads on to get a feel for the Ether 2 sound, starting first with a logical song from Supertramp. At the start of the song, I first noticed the cymbal soundstage imaging and width. The vocals are presented with a smooth character, not sounding too forward. The woodwind sounds excellent, very enjoyable, never harsh

 The Ether 2 is currently the flagship open back headphone in the DCA headphone lineup. The Ether 2 is made of titanium, aluminum, and carbon fiber weighing only 290 grams. Paired with DCA's excellent nitinol and leather headband system, the Ether 2 is one of the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn. 290 grams also places the Ether 2 as one of the lightest flagship planar magnetic headphones available around its price point

 With an adequately powered amplifier with good current delivery the Aether 2 could be an end game headphone for many in the head fight hobby not wanting to continue to climb the price ladder. DCA ETHER 2 Planar Magnetic Open Back Flagship Headphones First Look

MrSpeakers/Dan Clark Audio Aeons. Comfortable leather strap, but those ear pads are like cloud filled pillows for your ears.

Hard to beat Sennheiser when it comes to comfort. 5X0 Series disappear on your head, 6X0 hug tighter but don't move at all, and the ear shaped ear cups. Beyer line are generally comfy too, but the earcups don't fit my large ears as well. Planars I find can be a bit heavy, but that is also dependent on the headphone itself. The Koss 60ohm line are all super lightweight and comfy.

<div class="md"><p>Hard to beat Sennheiser when it comes to comfort. 5X0 Series disappear on your head, 6X0 hug tighter but don&#39;t move at all, and the ear shaped ear cups. Beyer line are generally comfy too, but the earcups don&#39;t fit my large ears as well. Planars I find can be a bit heavy, but that is also dependent on the headphone itself. The Koss 60ohm line are all super lightweight and comfy.</p>

Most comfortable headphones you have ever used?

 The sound is accurate, natural, close to neutral, a bit on the warm side, but very pleasing and easy to listen to, never fatiguing. It is amazingly light-weight and comfortable to wear. Fortunately it comes with an excellent Vivo cable, so no cable upgrade should be needed. I purchased my Ether 2 directly from MrSpeakers (now Dan Clark Audio)

I purchased the Ether 2 as an upgrade from my Aeon Flow, and have not been disappointed. It is easy to drive with any device I have used, but sounds best with my Sony DMP-Z1 digital music player, in fact it is the very best-sounding headphone I have used with this high-end device, out-performing my two higher-priced headphones. The sound is accurate, natural, close to neutral, a bit on the warm side, but very pleasing and easy to listen to, never fatiguing. It is amazingly light-weight and comfortable to wear

Great sound and comfort

It’s expensive as fuck, a $900 closed back headphone, but I have demoed it yesterday and can’t get enough. The tuning, detail retrieval and soundstage is insane.

I'm new to the hi-fi headphone world and loving my first setup. It's so exciting to listen to my favorite old songs with new life breathed into them. I haven't cried yet, but definitely got goosebumps, and I've turned my head more times than I can count to make sure I didn't hear some noise coming from outside my cans only to realize it was some ultra realistic sounding part of a song or live performance.  My wallet is drained for audio until self-christmas season and I'm already dreaming.  Here's what I'm thinking:  HiFiman Arya's, Schiit Bifrost DAC, and I'm good on the AMP side until I hit end-game.  The Arya's are for a headphone that's good with staging and space and I've heard the bass is good too if you have an amp with some power (8W balanced for the Burson Soloist).  The bifrost is to get something that leans a bit warmer in the chain.  I get the feeling I would like an R2R dac but a very good one is too pricey for me, so the bifrost is supposed to be a middle ground between R2R and Delta-Sigma.
