 The Emu Teak is a circumoral, closed back design and a variant of the Foster 443742 driver, and in the same family as the more famous Fostex TH900 series. It is composed of a 50mm neodymium magnet biocelular diaphragm and there have been numerous different implementations of this design over the years. Some of the best have included the Denon AHD5000, the Fostex TH610, the Mastroff TRX00 series, and the Fostex TH900 MK2s. But out of all of them, the Emu Teak reigns supreme in my opinion

 Unconsistently, Tile also called the treble hot, and while I hear why he would do so, because it can be rather lively in presentation at times, I would also argue that the treble has a touch of honey to it, remaining pleasurable to one's ears despite being slightly pushed forward in the mix. In the end, the Emu Teak retains an astounding and significant amount of treble detail for this driver model in particular, and it delivers said detail to the listener in a very pleasing and relaxing manner. In contrast, tunings of other headphones which use this driver have come across as sharp, fatiguing, or ear piercing, but the Emu Teak never does. Female singers tend to be more forward and emphasized than male vocals, which are often more laid back in their presentation and significantly less prominent in the mix with the Emu Teak

 These are a fabulous, beautiful-looking closed-back option to consider, irregardless of price, as they are sonically competent enough to rival much more expensive competition. Well, all of these are V-shaped headphones, but the Emu Teak appears slightly more U-shaped than V-shaped to my ears, meaning there is less of a reduction in the mid-range in the Emu Teak than in any of the other brother and sister headphones of this variety. I would describe the mid-range as soft, articulate, and purposeful despite being somewhat limited in presence

Choices, choices

 The Walnuts/CALs/etc have just enough of a v-shaped response to put some sparkle into duller recordings, but it's tasteful enough blend in with most of the cheap "studio" cans as well. They handle details just well enough for stuff like classical or heavy metal (despite not being the cleanest-sounding headphone out there), have a reasonable soundstage for closed headphones, and image well enough for decent directional audio.  Build quality & fit are decent. The headphone don't feel like they'd hold up to much abuse, but seem well-suited for years of regular usage

 Practically, the gap tends to be much narrower; most measurements I've seen also indicate that the wood negates resonances much better than the CAL's plastic cups.  Either way, you won't do much better for "fun"/"musical" full-sized headphones around $100.   Build quality & fit are decent. The headphone don't feel like they'd hold up to much abuse, but seem well-suited for years of regular usage. Pads are really quite soft & comfy despite their small size (and fit over my ears more or less perfectly), and the headband provides a very even but light clamp.  For the price, the only thing I'm missing is a detachable cable

These are essentially Creative Aurvana Live!'s (exclamation point is part of the name . . .) with wood cups

Advice for beginner help

I wouldn't recommend these.

E-Mu Teak after 3 days: It's not that good

Good overall sound ; warm. good bass. no stridency. Wood pleasing to look at and may contribute to mellow sound

 One year down the headphones rabbit hole has led me up to this point. I absolutely love headphones with great slam, tight bass, and some degree of edginess.

 They just sound more balanced than other headphones to me. I don't know if the wood really makes a difference because I do not have the Creative Aurvana Live! to test them directly to but I just love these headphones.

 So you can add a V-MODA BoomPro or something because I think they sound great for gaming! And make the ear cups slightly larger so they are more over ear. These are the first wood backed headphones I have heard and they do impress me. They just sound more balanced than other headphones to me. I don't know if the wood really makes a difference because I do not have the Creative Aurvana Live! to test them directly to but I just love these headphones

These headphones surprised me. They sound great! Very balanced and warm sounding. I absolutely love them. No complaints at all on the sound quality

Audioquest nighthawk... one of my favorite headphones. They sound like speakers and are just different from any headphone I have ever heard. Too bad they don’t make them anymore. Really special headphones I’m never selling. I just keep coming back to them and I’m always getting blown away.

Sundara for the usual reasons. Decent price and great sound. I honestly don't feel the need to upgrade.

DT770 Pro because it was my first set of "good" headphones. I say "good" because they are an entry-level set of headphones, but they are still fantastic. It can just go up from there.

For stuff I want to try, there's the obvious suspects like the HE-1 and the Abyss headphones with the full rig. More attainable sets that I would love to try are a good set of Stax, Focal Celestee, Meze Empyreans, and the Campfire Andromeda IEM's. Anandas and Susvaras are also desirable to me, but it may just be diminishing returns after the Sundaras.

Really any of the hifimans. I have tried headphones far more expensive than my HE400i but it still sounds great in comparison. It's a killer value. And although I don't have it yet I eventually plan on trying out my dream headphone which is the lcd-xc.

HE-6 or HE6SE.

I think a lot of people abstain from any version of the HE-6 because of the notorious speaker amp requirement claims. However, I think many people would be surprised how these perform on “normal” HP amps. I purchased the HE6SE v2 and was surprised to find it wasn’t as “underpowered” sounding as I was expecting it to be out of my 789 and Black Label! Totally expected some thin sound with no bass or mids. Definitely wasn’t the case.

IMO its sound will be more dependent on system synergy than power requirements. Will more power make a difference? Yes, most likely. However, you might be surprised to find how well it performs with your “normal” system. 

If anyone has any doubts about trying a HE-6 series headphone, I’m challenging you to try it anyways. It might be a safer bet than you expect. With that said, the HE6SE v2 may be one of the best deals currently available to us if you can find it around around the sale price.
