 Hey folks welcome to another passion for sound audio review, today we are looking at the new version of a fairly unique headphone, some time ago I reviewed and really really enjoyed the original Hifoman Davis. The reason I'm saying this is a unique headphone is because it's an open backed wireless headphone. Not something you find very often, certainly something that does make it a fairly unique headphone in terms of where and how you might use it, but it does pay great dividends in the sound quality it can produce. So needless to say when Hifoman produced the David Pro that I've got here in front of me today, I was very interested to see what that meant in terms of the evolution of a product that I already loved

 What that means is that the Deva Pro is still a fairly neutral and overall balanced tonality, it just has that bit of extra bass presence to be there when you need it, but it's not a bass emphasised headphone in any way shape or form. What that means is that tonally, everything is more coherent, so now the vocals and the other instruments are all much better balanced with those cymbals and percussion that I mentioned being a bit harsh from the original Devas. There is one small trade-off there, in the sense that the original Devas do still maintain a slightly more open and spacious sound, but that's a trade-off that I'm very willing to make because it's only something you notice in contrast if you're flipping back and forth between the two. On their own, the Deva Pros do not sound congested or closed in, they're just not comparatively quite as open sounding as the originals

5mm socket that takes the Blue Mini, but on the other side you've got another 3. Moving over to the Deva Pro now, and suddenly everything has a much better sense of balance, and looking at the frequency response charts, it's very hard to imagine just how much better balanced the Deva Pro is. Looking at the frequency response, it looks like the tiniest little bit of an adjustment, and yet somehow they come across just appropriately warmer and richer in all the right ways. And I say appropriately because they're not vastly different headphones, it's like the Deva Pro is everything the original Deva was, just with a tiny little bit of warmth added to fix the slight imbalance that the original has

3. The 400i is worse, but not by much, it also has recessed upper mids like the 5XX but it's a bit less even. Vocals are clean but can sometimes sound a bit thin.

 The resolution here is lower, and you miss some of the texturing the 500 can provide, and some of the instrument separation. However without EQ, the treble is elevated giving a sense of better detail at times.

 When stock, the air regions are slightly masked by the treble peak. There's a hint of the Deva grain but it's overall much smoother and 500-like.

 Inoffensive, in other words. Not really a lot of sibilance, a small peak in the air region which is rarely audible. 

Bill Callahan&rsquo;s &ldquo;Drover,&rdquo; a track with far less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Deva&rsquo;s general sound signature. The drums on this track sound wonderfully natural&mdash;there&rsquo;s a little extra bass presence here, but not much. Instead of sounding thunderous, as they can on bass-boosted headphones, they sound round and realistic. Callahan&rsquo;s baritone vocals get a lovely richness in the low-mids that is complemented by high-mid details that provide clarity

On Jay-Z and Kanye West&rsquo;s &ldquo;No Church in the Wild,&rdquo; the kick drum loop receives an ideal high-mid presence, allowing the drum loop&rsquo;s attack to retain its punchiness. We also hear the vinyl crackle and hiss in the background&mdash;it doesn't sound boosted but light and airy, a backdrop that has plenty of room to breathe on its own. The sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the beat are delivered with enough depth for their presence to be known, but this is where bass lovers might feel robbed, as there&rsquo;s not subwoofer-like depth here. Regardless, the whole of the mix sounds balanced, and the vocals are delivered without any hint of added sibilance

A jack on the side panel of the left earcup allows you to connect the included cable (a long, cloth-covered cable with no inline remote or mic), as well as the $80 Bluetooth dongle add-on accessory. The BlueMini dongle adds a little heft to the headphones, but they don&rsquo;t feel weighed down toward one side, and pairing it with a mobile device is a simple process. Once connected, you can stream audio and control playback with the button on the dongle, though it is otherwise limited in terms of volume and track navigation. Calls can be answered or ended with the same button that controls playback

HiFiMan estimates the dongle&rsquo;s battery life to be up to 10 hours, but your results will vary with your volume levels.

 See most other Bluetooth headphones, in my opinion, sound fairly compressed, bassy and not particularly well resolving and definitely not open and sound stagey like the Deva offers. Now, while this is not going to extract the most out of genres like rock, rap and R&B, it is definitely going to be well suited for things like jazz and blues and soul music and also things like intimate instrumental music. So the conclusion to this, I feel like the Bluetooth module was a bit of a missed opportunity, although still as a unit itself is actually a semi decent value. The headphone though, the Deva is actually in a strange position because there are probably superior headphones at lower costs

 This limitation almost seems on purpose. The curve of this would actually allow this to fit on an Aria or an Ananda or an HE-1000. However, this little tab right here is actually keeping it from being able to fit on those headphones. Now what's even more confusing is that this tab on the Deva doesn't actually do anything

 Con, the bass kind of sucks. Pro, the resolution for a $219 headphone is fairly good. Con, it's pretty bright. Pro, great vocal separation

If you needed ANC, one of the best sounding options is the Sennheiser Momentum 3 Wireless for $350 (on sale).

It doesn't have to be extremely high-end, but something on the level of let's say a Sennheiser HD 598. Are there any wireless options on the market that are this quality (or higher)?

 The ATH are anomalous in that the ear cups are too small for my ears but the material is so yielding that they hold very well and the pressure doesn't cause discomfort or headache.  Pros: Clarity and transparency of sound Easy set up, easy to use  Cons: Not comfortable for long listening periods Won't stay in place unless the body stays in place - which is counter-productive for wireless phones (and a deal breaker).

  When I began listening with the Deva I noticed that the bass was weak - which was a confirmation of what I had read in various reviews. In a string quartet, for example, the cello seemed to be swallowed up by the other instruments - it sounded like a second viola. It happened many times but not always, in chamber music, choral, and voice solos, that the bass line was an afterthought, which it hadn't been when listening with the other cans I use, mainly Sennheiser HD 600 and ATH M50x. Gradually, as I listened to more music and felt more comfortable skipping files I was not fully on board with, I began to tell myself that, unlike with the other headphones, "it's the source, stupid" - the Deva is much more revealing of the recording quality than my other phones

 With good source material, however, music I listen to with the Deva astounds and gratifies.  So why haven't I given Deva five stars? It doesn't fulfill my comfort requirement. The fit isn't wrong but the fabric doesn't embrace the skin, it remains apart from it, and thus there's no purchase, no grip. If I don't move neither do the cans - if I'm standing and sitting they're fine

 By contrast, the 600s have less weight and less pressure, the fabric holds without my feeling it, and the headphones don't move at all regardless of which direction my body moves or leans - they feel like they're part of my body. They're so comfortable I've forgotten I have anything on. I'll be returning these - with regret that grows the more I listen to them

 So it is quite a bit more expensive. But if you really value that Bluetooth functionality, if you want that wireless high end audio quality while you're moving, it might be something to consider. It's hard for me to recommend this product because I find that it's very niche within already a very niche market. I can't think of many people who really would wear a headphone like this

 And there was also the original Deva, which is the predecessor to the Deva Pro. I think that was released almost two years ago, but I haven't tried any of those. So I was really excited to check these out because some of you may know if you've watched some of my other videos, I really like Hi-Fi Man headphones. I feel like they offer very good performance for each model at their respective price points

5 to dual 3.5 millimeter headphone cable with a quarter inch adapter. But then we have this nifty little device, which is the Blue Mini R2R. And this is, of course, the follow-up to the Blue Mini Bluetooth dongle that was included with the original Deva

 I would like to see more high end audio quality headphones push in this wireless direction because that's been one of the limitations of headphones of this caliber. It's always the lack of practicality and versatility. So things like the Mobius and previously, I don't know if you guys remember this, but two years ago there were the rumors of a wireless LCD one close back. So you know, if we get a more affordable close back HIFIMAN headphone that's wireless, that would be really cool

New headphone niche: Wireless OPEN-back?? HiFiMAN Deva Pro Review

 While happy with the purchase, they are not truly wireless headphones. I'll probably buy wireless headphones with everything built in and use these with my video editing computer.  Original post: Sadly, it is too late to return these. Yes, they sound great

 The Bluetooth device, which is also the amp used to connect to a computer, broke within two months. Device connects to phone via Bluetooth connects, but there is no sound. I re-paired the device several times, let the battery completely drain and recharge, nothing.  I would return these, but it is too late

Update 8/25/2021: The second bluemini is already dead, dropped to three stars. I bought some very nice closed headphones, but they're going back as the sound isn't even close and you sweat. These headphones still sound amazing, but the bluemini just isn't that good. Unfortunately the USB-C cable uses the bluemini (has the microphone), so using it for phone calls or zoom is no longer an option

 I asked them to mail me a new bluemini and I would use their packaging to return their device. They offered a prepaid shipping label, so it seems that is how we will handle the return and swap for now. I should have just purchased new headphones and returned the old ones, disguised as the new ones, within the return period.

Everyone told me the HD800/S would be awful and that I would hate them. (My friends group) but when I got em, they were awesome, by far the best headphones I have ever heard.

On the flipside, everyone told me the 001mk2 and 003mk2 were awesome, but when I got them, they were some of the worst things I have ever heard.

Audioquest Nighthawk. By a fucking country mile.

There's a famous thread right here on Reddit calling them a mudslide covered in snake oil but it is absolute bullshit. They're a REALLY good set, they just present themselves differently to most headphones.

Audioquest Nighthawk. In a sense they're not the best headphones but they give off an effect, almost a cinematic experience  I don't get from other headphones. Sometimes we all get so caught up in what is neutral etc and sometimes we got to just enjoy the music, the Nighthawk do it in a sense that isn't the most technical but it just sounds good to me.

In Audio they try make rules, even call it a science, truth is it's a it's a subjective experience that doesn't have to measure "well" to sound good. The Nighthawk sound bold, big, lush, fun, it's prob muddy to some but then it's always in comparison to something.

I just got the Austrian Audio Hi-X55. The frequency response does look weird, but my first impressions are favorable when it comes to detail retrieval, clarity, and soundstage in FPS gaming. I go for a more bass lite sound and that’s just not going to be for everybody. So that’s got to be a consideration for anybody who’s thinking about trying them. They’ll dig deep, but they won’t make your head rattle.

It's actually really nice with acoustic stuff. It's quite colored, and I would not even call it "mid-centric" at least to my ears. More of bright sound that "sparkles" really well with jazz and chamber music. Not a lot of bass, but very linear to 50Hz. The Koss KDE250 is much more mid-focused to the point of throwing off timbre by quite a lot. The 6kHz peak is pretty harsh with EDM and such that already accentuate cymbals, but not an issue for me personally.

Don't agree with the "D" score for technicality either. Very decently resolving in mids and bass, good dynamics - in these regards notably better than the KSC75. Only real issue is the limited soundstage and mediocre imaging.
