 Naturally you can buy your own cables, but it's good to have all the options right away. Aesthetically, this isn't the most pleasing looking cable. It's kind of a semi-transparent, foggy clear coat, if you will. It makes kind of a weird texture noise to it, but sound quality wise, I was still really happy with it

 The differences are much more noticeable than you think and yes, you get diminishing returns. You can buy a good $300 headphone and it'll sound great. You can spend $1,000 and $2,000 and when you step up to $3,000, it's like, okay, how much better can it sound? These are very special. These aren't just like it sounds a little bit better

 This is an audiophile headphone, so we're going to be focusing on it as such. Now there are a few things I want to discuss in the beginning before we get into sound quality, and when you open the box, it's presented in a nice way. You have the headphones are kind of put in this really nice little liner inside. The three sets of cables are included in the middle, and that'll give you your XLR, your three quarter inch jack, or sorry, your quarter inch jack, and the 3

 It has a nice clamp force to it. It's very linear, and that's super important because when you buy a $3,500 headphone, you don't want it to fit certain heads much better than others. So small head versus large head. Some headphones and headsets or whatever you use, they don't have a linear clamp force, which means they have a little bit of give, then you get to here and it's a lot tighter

  If it is not obvious already, I personally happen to find that 1-star rating to be the most unjust rating of any headphone I have seen, which is why I am adding my own 5-star rating to support this headphones. I wish Amazon would remove that rating, unless the poster is a valid user who can back up their one-star rating with some solid evidence, which they have not had the decency to do.  If you're thinking of picking one up to audition, do not hesitate to do so, and let your own ears be your guide. I use several top of the line headphones, and some are even more expensive than this Hifiman He-1000se, and yet I can say that technically and sonically, this is one of the very best I have heard, for the kinds of music I listen to, but I dare say that this would be fantastic with most genres too.  I typically don't write any reviews, but I noticed that someone has given this great sounding headphone a 1-star rating without even bothering to write a review to say why. With the way this Amazon review system works, this person could be even reacting to the price tag, or simply giving the headphones a 1-star rating out of spite, most likely, without having even owned or heard the unit itself. In my view, a rating like that should not be deemed legitimate until the one who posted it can offer at least some cogent explanation for it that is backed by real world first-hand experience with the unit

This is a superlatively performing headphone.

 This thing only weighs 440 grams. And for a point of comparison, an LCD four weighs about 730 grams. But despite it being on the lightweight side of a premium priced headphone, it actually feels quite solid and noticeably more solid than the more plastic constructed Ananda or Aria or even the all metal Sundara. This definitely has a, quite a more premium feel than all of those, which is a good thing given the cost, but it still maintains kind of a lightweight nature of it

 But it's not going to be as strong or really as good in the bass response as something like an LCD4, which is going to be pretty much directly competing with this. And it's something that I would actually consider to be quite a bit superior in the bass response, though this is still going to pick up those errors, but a lot of those errors are going to poke through more from the mid-range and the trouble response than the errors that would be shown from the LCD4. Now one thing that is notable about this is how good it is at maintaining the integrity of everything even through incredibly busy, bassy recordings. So you can have very busy, bassy music, something like Mountains from Hans Zimmer, where most headphones really don't pull that song off very well

It may be overly bassy, but then you don't get the clarity of the instruments behind the bass track or you would have a song that is maybe displaying those instruments a little bit brighter than they should be, but kind of shits the bed on the bass. This has a good mix of clarity and detail and transparency to the bass response that not very many headphones have and that is very impressive

 So if you take a look inside here, you can actually see the magnets that are running horizontal to the membrane and they're kind of rounded off rather than squared off. And this is supposed to give them a quote unquote acoustically invisible sound signature or lack thereof. So I do have to say, I really appreciate the design philosophy that Heifman takes. It's basically take the biggest driver that you can get with the strongest magnets that you can get and put it in the lightest possible housing structure that you can get

My audiophile journey so far...

I've always loved Hifiman headphones; I love planar speakers (I have Magnepans), and Hifiman's planar headphones have always sounded so good to me. These are very revealing headphones, meaning that they won't make a poor recording sound any better than it does; but for well recorded music, the HE1000se are the best headphones I've ever tried. I use them with the Pass headphone amp, and it's a great combination. The cable that ships with the headphones isn't bad, much better than earlier stock Hifiman cables I've had, but I'll probably still get an aftermarket cable at some point

Superb headphones!

Once I stopped trying search for that, the realisation was mind-blowing. The soundstage starts in the centre of your head and extends to infinity, and there's absolutely nothing in the way, really like sitting there in the concert hall with empty earpads. And it is the recorded soundstage, not one rendered by the headphones. The instruments are placed where they were recorded, not projected where the headphones want

 It is not quite as detailed as the 800s but more detailed than the susvara. It has tremendous detailed sub bass. It has super fine high detail with incredible tall and wide soundstage beating the hd800s and susvara and abyss 1266. it is a bit grainier than the 1266 original but it is a more pleasing laid back sound

The HE1000SE or HEKSE for shorts is hifiman's most detailed headphone. In terms of sonic characteristics is sits between the Susvara and a HD800s. It is not quite as detailed as the 800s but more detailed than the susvara. It has tremendous detailed sub bass

 It has super fine high detail with incredible tall and wide soundstage beating the hd800s and susvara and abyss 1266. it is a bit grainier than the 1266 original but it is a more pleasing laid back sound. Overall this is the headphone to get over the hd800. if you can only afford 1 headphone get the HEKSE

Best TOTL heaadphone out there in it's price range.

My dream headphone is the HD800. Have a bunch of Sennh's headphones and I love their sound signature. When I saw the HD800 I dropped the jaw.
