 So if a headphone or speaker is a bit sibilant and you have a sibilant recording then it's gonna be Obvious and to me, it's really distracting these get a pass though they get a pass with sibilance because they are one hundred and seven dollars for an open-back headphone if You have decent power and maybe access to EQ I think this is probably the best open back you can get at the price. There is the Phillips SHP 9,500 or 9,600. It's a very well regarded open back headphone. That's pretty affordable I still think that's like a hundred and fifty dollars and a hundred and seven dollars This is a compelling headphone because if you're new you're just getting into headphones and you have an amplifier These are really good

 It's kind of cool right there You can see right through it on the back side. You can see there's a mesh covering right here and I Would say the soundstage on these isn't super wide and when I had these lying on the desk Just playing I did notice that it it didn't seem like it was super open on the back So while it is an open back headphone, I think this mesh grill is Impeding some of the sound coming out of the back Fit wise even I wear glasses to you know fit wise I didn't really have any issue and even when I put these on my voice got a little bit deeper from what I'm hearing it So these aren't Completely open like there's nothing on the back So there is a little bit of sound mitigation coming out of the side then the cups right here are made out of plastic Overall, I don't really have any complaints on these especially at a hundred and seven dollars hundred fifty dollars I don't think I'd really have any issue with the build quality on these. I think they're pretty good They're also pretty light the headphones that I compared these to are the Hi-Fi men addition XS. That's a $500 headphone I did this so it's five Hundred dollar headphone

 My WM1A from Sony on balanced drove it kind of a little bit better. Sure I could get it loud just like a dongle but I could still tell it's lacking a little bit and that it still was struggling to push the 400SE properly. And then the upper mids are too elevated and they become aggressive and there's moments of sibilance. Thankfully it's not all the time but it can occur more than I desired

 And I found that they all sounded bloated in the bass and had aggressive shrilly highs. And that's a sign that planars are not being driven properly and so dongles are a no go. Moving up to daps. Daps are kind of eh

 Overall I don't mind the 400SE but I don't really recommend it. What do I recommend? What do I do with it? There we go. I recommend the Hi-Fi Mint Sundara and here's the reason why. The Hi-Fi Mint Sundara is 100% better than the 400SE in every single way

 It sounds like no matter what gear it's on it always sounds like you have speakers on each side of your head. And things pass and they go and then they get small and then they get big in and as they expand out. It's a very strange soundstage and it is definitely everything's over here everything's over here and there's a little bit here. And it doesn't do a really good job of tracking things across the stage as you get those gaps as it moves across

Seriously. I've seen so many people crank those earbuds up to max and ignore their phone warning them about hearing damage.

I've also heard music playing from someone's airpods from across an entire room (~15-20ft).

 But for me, I immediately tried my Sony 7506’s and it was like the 400se’s were second class citizens. I get it. The thing about headphones, is it’s a completely subjective topic. Everybody hears different things

 Some say bass is great. Others say non-existent. But to me, I just want quality of sound. Sure, I like bass, but not for the sake of quality

 Even a mm off will greatly effect the sound. So, decided to try the entry level 400se headphones to see what “entry level audiophile” is all about. I mean, at $129, it was a no-brainer. Of course, at 250ohm, they are power hungry

Don’t believe hype matches performance

If you’re interested in buying an amp, HE400se. They sound awesome even with the apple dongle from my phone, and while treble is a little low for my taste, it’s really good and not in-your-face. Just buy a $100 amp. I use it on my desktop onboard too, but i feel like i can push it way more

A   friend had both the Audio Technica M20X and HyperX Cloud II  headphones. I tried both with my phone (flac file - Rock music), and the  M20X was absolutely horrible. It sounded like and old radio. In  contrast, the hyperX headphones felt more alive and definetely clearer.  Wasn't it supposed to be the other way around? Why is this?

I  will be able to purchase my first pair of (proper) headphones soon.  Until now I have only owned Samsung's earbuds included with my phone,  and some crappy chinese bluetooth headphones. I was thinking about  getting these (prices from my country in usd):

$177  - DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm | $125 - ATH-M40X | $96 - AKG K240 | $50 -  Monoprice 8323 | $42 - Monoprice Retro | $35 - Superlux Hd668b / Hd681  Evo | ( $84 - HyperX Cloud Alpha )

Being  my monthly income $234 (above average here) I wanted to spend as little  as possible, so the Beyerdynamics are the most expensive I could  afford, if I wait for another month.

I will not be gaming or  mixing with them, just listening to music / watch movies. I love very  different genres (Jazz, Heavy Metal, Classical, Opera, EDM, HipHop,  Rock, Pop, Country, Bossa Nova, Lofi, Vaporwave...). I want the best  sound quality possible, not really caring about open or closed, since I  will be using them in my room (house sometimes noisy due to family and  dogs, but whatever). Take into account that buying earpads and dacs here  is very expensive, so that is out of the question. I will be using  these headphones with an average Laptop and average Smartphone.

If you could advice me which headphone to buy, or any other recommendations, I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much!

ATH-M20X : Worst cans I've ever tried

 When I tried them with mobile devices they were only able to play cleanly at very low volume--easily going into distortion. In my opinion, a headphone amp is required for realistic volume levels.

I really wanted to like these. ($107 is a bargain for planar magnetic headphones.)  They do sound impressive. However, over long listening sessions (I work in audio) they grow increasingly fatiguing

You definitely need a decent amp. They can be a little fatiguing.

To me, the Hifiman He400se is an amazing headphone for its price. I own the China version and got it at a very cheap deal.

My setup for now: Hifiman He400SE | Tin Hifi T4 | Fiio E10K

 They proved difficult to drive even with my DX3 pro+, and were inconsistent in their performance; the sound quality would actually change during a session with lows and mids varying in level. Maybe a characteristic of planars? I don't know. EQ did not produce expected results as it does with dynamic drivers. I also found the headphones to be so uncomfortable after about 20 minutes that they actually caused pain
