[music] Hello, welcome back to another pen talk. Thanks for tuning in. Thanks for joining me as I explore the wide world of pens. Yes, you see before you a pen you kind of might recognize

 If you're interested in this pen, just do a search for X One Five Nine. I think that's the easiest and that seems to show up. There was only one seller when I bought this, but now there's more and the price looks like it's consistent around eight us dollars delivered. You may find a cheaper price, but they charge your shipping, so at the end of the day you're still paying about eight bucks

 It's about the biggest section in any pen that I have, so let's uh, put some more Watermen Serenity Blue ink on paper and then we'll do a final summation. So so I like the Nib more than I expected. Uh, they did a nice job with it. It certainly feels a little bit different on the paper than any other jinhao nib that I have, and that's a good sign

 It's well done and for the price point, extremely well done. It certainly fits well in the hand without posting and you may ask, does it post and the answer is yes, it does. You need to put a little bit of pressure and that cap really slides in securely. You notice the change in the weight, but it's still pretty well balanced in the hand and that cap is secure

4 For this reddit specifically I will add that i have no need to see another thread about pens & watches, pens & knives, pens & dice or whatever the latest brainfart might be. I am here to read about fountain pens and would like to see more reviews and opinions about pens to guide me in my future purchases and help to avoid expensive mistakes.

Of course I don’t mean to attack anyone and their passion, I just want to hear some fresh opinions that aren’t heard all that often. I’ll lead the way with three lesser ones:

1. There’s a time and a place for fountain pens. I love all of my pens to death and using them always brightens my day, but for work purposes, most of the shitty paper I’m given can’t even handle anything bigger than an F nib with average ink. Just as much thought and passion went into ballpoint pens and in my opinion, they’re much better all-rounders, so purposefully trashing ballpoints makes this sub looks quite pretentious and elitist.

2. Kaweco makes _the_ ugliest fountain pens I have ever seen in my life, especially the sport. Oh god.

3. Where’s the fun in collecting TWSBI, Lamy, Kaweco or other pens just to have them in different colors? You could explore so many new brands, mechanisms or models with that money.

Again, no hate towards anyone, I just find it fun to hear from some of the people who might not see much representation in the sub.

It seems like a lot of people use Baystate Blue, and I'm curious why. It seems like there are a lot of beautiful blue inks around that behave better. When I read reviews of BSB, it seems like in addition to the notorious staining capacity of this ink, it also feathers and bleeds, in some cases even on Rhodia paper. With so many wonderful blue inks in the fountain pen world, why do you choose Baystate Blue (if you do)? In what kind of circumstances does this become the ink of choice? What's the deal with this ink?

Why Baystate Blue?

OK for the price.

Can't beat Jinhao for bang for your buck.  The 159 and x750 are great writers.  You can also swap nibs on them pretty easily.

I’m trying to get into fountain pens however I am in high school and therefore have zero money. I’ve done some research and the LAMY Safari seems to be the best option for cheap- is that right? Are there any other pens that are good for a beginner and cheap? Thanks

Fountain pen suggestions

The nib is rubish, only buy this pen if you are going to make a franken-pen

I wish inlaid nibs would make more of a comeback (like come on the Sheaffer ones are GORGEOUS), but I don't mind mass produced steel nibs like Jinhao and Jowo. I kinda like the cheaper nibs purely because they provide an opportunity to try grinding whatever nib type I want, without feeling bad if it goes wrong. I ground the M Jinhao nib in my Jinhao 159 into a crisp italic and it is lovely. At some point I want to try my hand at grinding an Architect, mostly because buying a Jinhao nib and doing it myself is the cheapest way to try one out

There are so many unique, beautiful pens out there. But how many times have we seen a beautiful $400 pen brandishing a shiny Jowo #6 nib? 

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Jowo nibs as much as the next. And perhaps there’s no use in reinventing the wheel (“if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”). But if I’m spending hundreds of dollars on a beautiful unique pen, I want a beautiful unique nib to come with it! 

I love beautiful pens as much as the next. But, at the end of the day, I only get so much satisfaction from looking at my pens (and don’t get me wrong, I could ogle over pens all day long). Ultimately pens meant to write with, and they are *even more* beautiful in virtue of their ability to write. So, to me, there is value in a pen that write *uniquely and beautifully*. 

I’m tired of Jowo nibs. Give us something new! *We’ll spend money on it* (c‘mon pen companies!)
