 I think the gold's a little Romanian, but for how they sound, and I'll tell you how they sound, they sound like a less bassy, slightly narrower version of the TH-X100s. God damn it, the Fostex. The pads aren't as comfortable as that, but the pads are not terrible. And the clamp isn't quite as lenient, but the comfort is good

 I can't hone in on what to tell you about them to really blow you away because it's a listen thing. It's a go to the sound demo. My sound demos always get like one fifth of the views of this review. So you're watching this review and you're going, I don't want to listen to the sound demo, but you should because I don't have to explain how they sound a lot of the times because I have faith in my sound demos now

Currently using the Meze 99 Classics (with larger stock pads) and sonically, I like them. Things I enjoy:. - Enjoying the bass and smoothness of the sound.

 The only way I get the bass I want is EQ and the Xbass on the hip dac. Otherwise I'd say they sound pretty good in just about everything I've listened to with it but I'm still not sure I like them enough to keep em..

Don't love it, don't hate it.

 The Warmth and powerful bass keeps things exciting. If you're a bass head, these are the way to go, as far as entry level headphones go.

 Unfortunately the bass is boomy and bloated and interferes with the mids. The other deal breaker for me was the comfort. The cups are too small, they touch my ears, and when I turn my head side to side it breaks the seal of the pads and does funny things to the sound. I will keep my HD6XX for home listening and IEMs for portable

I wanted to love these so bad. The design is beautiful. The wood is beautiful. They are very sensitive, don't need an amplifier, work great with a phone

1) Sony Pulse 3D headset. Got these free from a friend. Bad seals, ok quality for gaming, not very comfortable 

2) AirPods Max. Controversial, and absolutely amazing. Best Bluetooth headphone out. It’s in the Waterfield case

3) Samson 850. Has a Brainwavs Hybrid pad change. Comfy now, audio? Meh. Depends on what you’re listening to

4) Philips SHP9500. The best starter open back. Cheap and surprisingly great. Lightweight and comfy. 

5) Meze 99 Classics. Gorgeous, wood, and PUNCHY. Definitely not for analytical listening. My fun headphone. 

6) Koss PortaPro X. Got these as a recommendation here, they’re ok. A little too bass heavy for my tastes as I have more portable balanced options

7) Sony WH-1000XM4. Thought these were the best out when I bought them. I had NO idea then compared to now. With EQ, I can make them tolerable, but I’d rather listen to the AirPods Max. 

8) Hifiman Sundara. Not much to say about this that hasn’t already been said. They’re awesome for the $350 price

9) Audiotechnica m40x. Got these free from a friend. Very surprised with how good they sound. Definitely great for the $99 entry price. They tend to be better through my DAC/amp than directly from my phone. But that’s could be my tastes. 

10) Taotronics SoundLiberty 79. Recommendation from DankPods. They’re good for a $50 TWS. 

11) Enacfire E60. I have zero clue why these are recommended so highly on Amazon and even rtings. These are garbage. $30, and nothing but mud. Really. Stay away from them. 

12) AirPods Pro. They’re AirPods, of the professional variety. I have Dekoni Bulletz on there. Great sound, wish it was bassier, but it’s my workhorse. 

13) AirPods 2 with wireless charging case. Got these first before I knew anything about headphones. They’re AirPods. Convenient, and I don’t use them anymore for obvious reasons. 

14) KZ ZSN Pro X. Dual driver IEM. Solid for $25.

15) BlueParrott B450xt. Yes, I consider this because it plays audio. For calls it’s amazing. Fantastic mic (as it is for truckers). Sound? It is ok for podcasts, but that’s about it. 

16) Grado sr80e. My first pair of open backs. They’re good. Wire is heavier than the headphone. Sparkly treble. Not my go to, but they’re good. 

17) Apple EarPods. Just your basic dirty buds. They’re ok. I’ve heard worse. 

I’m taking a break for a while from purchasing. Lol. 

My ultimate dream set is the Empyreans, but I’m focusing on upgrading my amp next and just enjoying those Sundara. Love those guys.

Can you comment on transparency mode for the headphones that have them?  Specifically the airpods max and the Sony xm4. I’ve got the AirPods Pro and I absolutely love the transparency mode, even with the music playing I can hear everything around me, clearly, and I can even hear where the sound is coming from. I also have jbl bt500 and Shure aonic 50 and the transparency mode is pretty disappointing, especially in the jbl’s, it just kind of sounds like I’m listening to an awful mono recording of the outside world that chooses certain frequencies to amplify more than others

I'd keep Airpods Max and Pro, Sundara, and Meze and sell the rest.

I have 17 different headphones. Meet the family.

 There is a cloudy bloom in this range that sounds like the resonance of the walnut enclosure. It is prominent enough and undesirable enough in character that it is a rather constant annoyance to me, unless I'm listening to music mastered between the late '70s and early 80s, where there tends to be less relative content in this frequency range.  Normally this would be a deal breaker for me, but the mids and highs are so gorgeous that I still recommend these headphones and rate them highly.  The low bass is nondescript

 It is there in proper balance, but isn't especially punchy, tight, nor articulate. It doesn't sound bad, rather its overall character simply leaves me utterly nonplussed.  Some folks claim these phones are dark or rolled off in the high frequencies. I don't find this to be the case at all

 I experienced no ear or head fatigue after 2 hours of continuous listening at high levels. They are surprisingly easy to drive. I like my music loud, and even running them straight from my Galaxy S8 without any external amp or DAC, I can get surprisingly loud, clean levels. The headphones are the most comfortable pair I own, out of a large collection, exceeding even the cozy AKG K701

 It doesn't sound bad, rather its overall character simply leaves me utterly nonplussed. The low bass is quite vibrant though, which is good. Some folks claim these phones are dark or rolled off in the high frequencies. I don't find this to be the case at all

Beautiful highs and mids, cloudy midbass, 1st pair arrived with driver imbalance

Meze 99 classics: 3 tiers higher than 99 neos, good bass and sub bass plus it handles boosting, way better mids and less recessed highs, mids are better than hd 560s for my surprise, good soundstage and imaging similar to urbanite xl, basshead friendly BUT the price tag is very high (309€). I managed to find a second hand one at 120€, but if you want a cheaper but similar experience the urbanite xl are the way to go.

.. I've listened to cd quality audio and google play music (320kbps) quality and it all sounds great.  As I'm not an audiophile, I can't use a bunch of fancy adjectives to describe them, but overall they sound clearer than my other headphones

 They are oval shaped instead of being more tall than wide like the shape of your ear. They are padded well but IMO not thick enough as you'll feel the driver against your ear. The head band is pretty comfortable and didn't bother me at all over 2 hours. These definitely are not uncomfortable headphones, but if you have large ears or are sensitive to pressure on your ears these may not be the best headphones for you

 They are too small in my opinion and put too much pressure on your ears, especially the top of your ears. I'm extra biased as I've had pain in my left ear ever since wrestling as a kid which is irritated by long headphone sessions. I have this problem with the m50's but NOT the 598's. I listened to them for about 2 hours and my left ear was sore the next morning but my right ear was fine

 The base / low end is great - tighter than the m50's and stronger than the 598's. The 598's are a great headphone but the classics just sound better in every way to my ears. Obviously, the bose sound terrible when compared with the 99's.  The sound is amazing, the build quality is great, but I do have a problem with the ear cups

My advice is sell all but the 6XX,Meze and Sundara’s sure the Porta Pro’s are ok and get the Hemps if you want a Grado.
