So since filming the video basically we've been in touch with NZXT about some of the issues that we faced in terms of I guess predominantly being 24 bit 96 kilohertz and that really flat sound that we ended up getting and they have actually looked into it and basically agreed that we were on the same wavelength excuse the pun but the whole point being that there was an issue at 96 kilohertz and they're not entirely sure what it is at the moment and they are actually working with their ODM who actually you know manufactures the microphone to their specifications to see exactly what the issue is but it looks like there's either some kind of high pass filter or an EQ issue and they have issued a statement which says NZXT is working to implement a firmware update which should further enhance the sound profile on the 24 bit 96 kilohertz setting. That said we will always look for ways to further optimize the product post launch and appreciate any and all feedback. Now I just want to give my kind of you know two cents on that because that's a really really good thing because they're still sticking to the promise that this is a plug and play or plug and go device where no software is needed through the way of doing a firmware update which I'm not entirely sure whether that's going to be something that is submitted as part of the driver package to Microsoft to be certified and actually enable it from there or whether it's going to be a matter of getting hold of the microphone plugging it in via the USB and maybe using some kind of a tool to actually update the firmware

 It's typical NZXT with a simple white and purple box that gives us kind of a first glimpse of the capsule's design as well as all of the major specs. NZXT claim that it's designed for gamers has high quality audio at 24 bit and 96 kilohertz and a simple and rugged design. They also boast how they use a cardioid pickup pattern as opposed to those microphones like the HyperX Quadcast that gives you multiple options and therefore more room for confusion. The beauty of a cardioid pickup pattern is that it's extremely directional and most people would tend to steer more towards it as it reduces unwanted noise like your mechanical keyboard or your mum telling you to get off the PC as your dentist has been sitting on the table for the last 30 minutes and not understanding that you can't pause an online game

NZXT Capsule Review - Don't Buy It Just YET!

 Plus you have to come up really close to the mic for it to pick up your voice and that’s a big down for me. I’m really disappointed of this product.

 You see when the capsule launched while on paper it claimed to operate at 24 bit 96 kilohertz at these settings it sounded frankly awful and no one picked up on it and I've got to ask why? Well to start with NZXT branded the capsule as plug and play and marketed it in such a way that you wouldn't need any software and that's a big selling point to gamers and streamers who don't want to spend time playing about with equalizers and low or high pass filters they just want to play games and Windows has their back as by default Microsoft sets the audio quality to 24 bit 48 000 hertz or 48 kilohertz which don't get me wrong sounds pretty damn good but it's like having a Tesla and never taking it out of chill mode. So why? What went wrong? Well casting back to the launch and after discovering this it turned out the microphone seemed to be missing a baked in EQ into the sound profile for its rated audio quality but why did no one else pick this up at the time? Well when we discovered this we actually made a video talking about it from I guess an initial glance it seemed some YouTubers and media just weren't aware that you had to change the quality and others actually blamed the software they used to record their samples claiming that they only record at 48 kilohertz. I mean software like Audacity which is free by the way would have quite easily got around that roadblock so I don't I don't frankly buy that I mean can you believe the audacity of some people? I'll see myself out so for some clarification especially for those who haven't seen our original videos on this microphone take a listen at 24 bit 48 kilohertz. In a world where rising energy costs and the general cost of living is actually skyrocketing 20 pounds or 40 dollars is actually the difference between heating or eating right now so what I'm trying to say is it's not something I'd dismiss

 So like with many things the easiest way to analyse it comes down to the higher the number the better. It really is that simple with something like this, to a certain degree. Now when NZXT launched the capsule it was rated at 24 bit and 96 kilohertz. On paper you wasn't going to get better unless you were using some crazy high-end audio device like the Mixpre 6 II from sound devices like we use for 32 bit float audio but for the type of gaming audience that NZXT were targeting they were basically coming in as top dog competing with the likes of the Elgato Wave 3 which had already dominated the market for quite some time and this is where it kind of all went terribly wrong

 The capsule microphone from NZXT launched last year and it was bad. Though according to every media outlet and YouTuber out there, they would have made you believe it was simply amazing. Now while I don't want to stomp over kind of old ground, I do want to show you how one simple fix could have actually now made it the very best microphone for the money on the market today. It's a bold claim I know but one that didn't quite make sense before but now actually does

 NZXT again seems really committed to tweaking and updating their first microphone so it's possible over time it will find a super nice sweet spot that makes it a big big competitor in the space.  This is the NZXT Capsule. It's cute. A small bit of housekeeping before we dive into my review. I think it's important to mention NZXT's goal with this microphone, and then start there as a baseline

 They make gaming and streaming PCs, as well as all-in-one liquid coolers, motherboards, power supplies, cases… you get the idea. There's one area it hasn't quite been successful in though, and that's audio. Back in late 2019, NZXT announced what it called an all-in-one audio ecosystem centered around the Air headset, but then backtracked before it launched. Sometime around mid-2020, NZXT put up a note on its website explaining the decision, saying the lineup wasn't quote, living up to the quality standards that we strive for

 So my game volume if I have guests on my Twitch stream if I have notifications they are all extremely loud and then I have to go in and tweak all those settings to make sure that I can sort of hear everything at a level that I like that is good for me that works for me as a streamer or as somebody who is you know having a meeting or whatever you're going to use a microphone for and that's really frustrating. Not great for a mic that wants to be truly plug and play. Okay back to the review. For better or worse NZXT wisely chose to sidestep any and all software for the capsule mic

NZXT Capsule review: $130 microphone for streamers

Sounds super clean and crisp, and honestly a really great value considering it's plug and play.  Pros - Plug and play - Super crisp/clean sound right out of the box - doesn't pick up *any* background noise besides my voice - Once it's set up, never have to mess with it again  Cons - Infinite knobs and no software make it really hard to find the initial sweet spot

Great Plug & Play Capabilities

 I think it actually sounds great for spoken word, for voice, but unlike these other microphones, you know, it doesn't have really any other features that kind of set it apart. And of course, the only other thing to keep in mind here is price. So the NZXT Capsule Microphone is available for $130. The Blue Yeti X you can get for $140 right now

 But as we kind of noticed in that lineup comparison, all these microphones sound pretty good. Alright, and that'll do it for our review of the NZXT Capsule Microphone. It doesn't necessarily have any single feature that, you know, sets it above, you know, any other microphone. You know, it doesn't have a crazy shock mount or crazy software or anything

NZXT Capsule USB mic review: The easiest way to sound great on stream

There’s nothing to dislike with the microphone. The sound quality is great and crisp and different ranges. There is an easy accessible spin wheel that lowers or raises your mic volume and when clicking that it mutes you and the mic turns red. It’s very convenient

 And the last note about the physical features, the stand itself is very solid and where most of the weight comes from with it being aluminum as I said before, and it stands 5 and a quarter inches tall or around 135mm from base to the top of the arm where it locks into place. And the bottom underneath is all rubberized so it won't move around or slide on your desktop. It is rather limited in terms of flexibility as it only moves around 120 degrees before the bottom hits the stand again. So you want to use your own boom arm or their boom arm, you don't want to use the stock stand

 So I think, you know, clean and simple design for sure, and I like the fact that it doesn't scream gamer, you know? Also speaking build and construction, inside the microphone is a built in shock mount and pop filter behind the front grill which will help improve the overall sound from the 25mm cardioid capsule inside. They said it's tuned for vocals, and with it being cardioid, it's aimed to eliminate background noise on your desktop, but we'll test the quality in a little bit. The capsule is also rated at 24-bit 96,000Hz resolution which only a few other gaming mics out there currently have as well, so a bit of a leg up on most of the competition. On the front of the capsule itself we have two buttons for controlling gain and the others for adjusting the volume of your headphones if you choose to plug it into the mic to monitor your audio as a pass-through, which you can right there on the bottom

 The one I have is black and I did see they're also making a white version, and who knows if we'll get other color options later on down the line. But the mic is made of an ABS shell with an all-lunum stand that definitely provides the heft when you hold it. So I think, you know, clean and simple design for sure, and I like the fact that it doesn't scream gamer, you know?  It doesn't have the most features out there, you know, there's no four different pickup patterns where I limit it to just cardioid. But honestly, for most vocal recording use cases, that's what you're going to want is cardioid, not omnidirectional, nothing else like that cardioids what you want. So I'm fine having no RGB, no other stuff like that. The feature set here, I think is appropriate for 130 and the sounds all you really care about, right? So I definitely recommend it
