"CUSTOM" - this is honorable name of PILOT. Common feature of CUSTOM series is intently to chase quality of "writing". Extra decoration is not here. Only quality. The eldest son, "CUSTOM 74" was born at1974. It was revolution in the writing tool world. Quality, design and price... standard and foundation is here. Maybe it is correct that this "became" standard. Now, three brothers are here. 

Rule of "CUSTOM" family 
All foundation for writing is here. Moderate thickness of axis, balanced weight, preferable condition of nib and chic design. Perfect. By the way, there are "74" and "742". It can be said that this 3 kinds are base of all "CUSTOM". What's different point ? The decoration, length and thickness is difference a little. However the most different point is nib size. "CUSTOM 743" is #15, the most biggest among this 3 series (But this doesn't mean large nib is good). Oh, price is different also... pretty.

Actually, this brothers are very handful ! Ah, who is the Mr. Right ? Size and kinds of nib, thickness... ah, how difficult ! Certainly, you can't escape from their charm ! .

Nib is 14K (#15), large size. This large nib is actually majestic. Arched shape is elegant. The total balance is very good. Look nice. 

FALCON nib 
This nib is especially strange. The tip of nib is very soft. Even only press a little, you can confirm that slit is clearly open. So, can change width of letter easy. (Generally, it is near width of Fine.) It is said like "FUDE (Japanese traditional brush) ". And design is interesting also. To make supreme softness, there is only minimum "word".

New (to me) Pen Day: Pilot (the First) Custom K-500RS Music Nib Introduced to the Market 1972

This item was everything that I expected it to be. I purchased it because I had seen one that a friend had, and I liked it. I am also very familiar with the Pilot pen company and know that they make excellent high quality products. So, I was/am not really surprised that this pen is everything that it was advertised to be

I’ve really gone off the deep end both faster and deeper than I anticipated. 

All started with the desire to get the Ti Ultra because I love a good rollerball.  Loved the idea of being able to have a cool pen and get Pelikan, MontBlanc and other great refills in a handsome Titanium pen.  The fact that it came with both #6 Titanium and Steel Bock nibs were initially just pluses.  I decided to see if I even liked FPs and got the Metropolitan, Lamy Safari, Kaweco Sport, and Jinnhao 750.   

I quickly saw how much I preferred FPs, and the community.  I then moved to a Ltd Edition, Ebony Conklin All American, a Kaweco Steel and Brass sport as well as the Aluminum, a Pilot Prera, a Sailor Compass some additional Lamys, a Noodlers Ahab and Triple Tail and two TWSBI Ecos and a TWSBI AL R, a Muji, some other Jinhaos etc. 

My favorite writers are the Kaweco Steel in Medium and the TWBIs in the stub which I tuned to be a very smooth italic bold.  

I really want a nice gold nib with some flex.  I really like my Sailor but it’s too stiff and I prefer something with a little thicker line.  

I know the Vanishing Point is a nice pen but not what I’m looking for.   

I’m considering the Pilot Falcon, in a soft but not sure of the thickness, a Sailor 1911L love how the Loch Ness looks, but would take it however and the Pro Gear in  (perhaps in bold or music) I’ve also thought about the custom 74 or the platinum 3776 and have always liked the look of the Diplomat.   

Alternatively I’ve considered a nice steel nib and have heard good things about the Fabre Castel, E-Motion and the Visconti steel nibs.  I consider the Visconti Homo Sapiens -particularly the dream pen 

Like variation are very important as is a nice pen thats handsome, well crafted, a solid name with a good filling system that can be used for decades and hopefully passed down.  One of my main drawback for the Sailors and the Pilots mentioned is their filling with a converter -though I do like changing inks, after trying a few dozen samples and having 6 or 8 full sized bottles I’m starting to hone in on a few that I’d like to use most all of the time.  

Have always found this community to be friendly, collegial, knowledgeable and patient so I’d really appreciate any help you guys could provide.

First gold Nib - looking for smooth and some line variation and some flex. thoughts and opinions requested and appreciated.

 I own nearly a dozen Pilot pens with FA nibs in all sizes, so I hope that what I've learnt can help you. The fact that all my 743's have worked perfectly out of the box is of note. That could not be said of the 912's I own. The #10 nib in the 742 was a great improvement over the 912, but in my opinion, the #15 nib in the 743 was a FURTHER improvement in the FA nib

 Finally and surprisingly, the #15 nib is not very much larger than the #5 nib. Larger? Yes, but so what? I had, very briefly, a Platinum 3776 and its nib was slightly larger than the PC 74's nib. I suppose, the 3776 nib is about the size of the pilot #10 nib? My #15 is larger than the 3776 nib was, but again - so what. My 3776 never wrote, so back it went
