So do I recommend the HD 800S? Well, it's expensive. Maybe not as your only headphone, unless the things I described are the exact sound you're after....

I am listening to my HD800S while reading this. I own many headphones, and the HD800S offers tremendous value for the sales asking price.

The Sennheiser HD 800 S are excellent sounding headphones for critical listening. They're comfortable and have a sturdy, durable build quality but like most open back critical listening models, they're not very versatile. They're not designed for outdoors or to use casually, but plugged into an amp, they deliver an exceptional listening experience.

Usually most wide soundstage headphones tend to sound really unnautral since it usually comes across as just a wall of thin sound that is plastered in a straight line in front of your face. The HD800S doesn't do that, it sounds VAST, not artificially wide. All of the sound is actually focused in front of you.

ndly recommend to someone who is looking for a good sounding higher-end headphone? Not really. Once you are nearing the kilobuck range, personal target curves and enjoyments vary and matter more per dollar. The HD800 IMO does not have a tuning majority of people would find agreeable

This is a large reason why I tend to stick to Sennheiser. Although they don't feel like they have very impressive build quality, their products have been shown to last a damn long time. I've never read of any failure with the HD600 series or the HD800 despite them existing for many, many years.

For CDs, we switched over to our Woo Audio WA6 Special Edition headphone amplifier, which significantly improved the HD 800s' overall sound quality, most notably in the dynamics and resolution of fine detail.
