After you get your mix down, then check it on the HD linear mode just to see what it sounds like on headphones, on the boombox, on the earbuds, in the nightclub if you've got bass heavy or EDM music, in the cars, but just number one, don't switch between different studios all the time when mixing. Another big tip would be before you mix, listen to a lot of reference material to acclimate yourself to the room you're mixing in. You can import the reference material right into your DAW, or there's a few system-wide options you can use to get this working with your system

 Headphones and software which together form the VSX, a headphone monitoring system that's supposed to simulate the sound of mixing in a well treated, flat mixing environment. Some of the best in the world actually. What this software and hardware combo tries to do is solve some of the most common problems with mixing on headphones or on monitors in less than ideal or untreated rooms. So the basic problems you have with mixing on headphones are number one, not all headphones have a flat frequency response

 So the hardware itself, the headphones themselves, they're not quite as sturdy or not as heavy, not as much metal as my Beyerdynamic DT880 Pros, but they're sturdy enough. They're definitely comfortable for long mix sessions. I've listened to them for hours on end and never gotten uncomfortable. CHEAP BUILD, BUT WORK GREAT

 Because normal stereo speakers, for example, they will color or hype the sound so that will affect your mixing decisions. What you basically want when you're mixing is the most honest and true sound so that you won't be overcompensating in certain areas, for example. So, for example, if you're mixing on very small speakers that are lacking in the low-end area, your ears might tell you that you might need to add some bass frequencies to your mix. But that probably won't translate well onto other systems as the bass might end up sounding bloated or overcompensated

 Now, it's not as simple as that because the room or environment that you mix in can have a drastic effect on how the sound from the speakers reaches your ears. In other words, the room you mix in can have a drastic effect on the sound that's coming from your monitors. And rooms generally are far from flat, especially untreated rooms. Sure, a good studio will have treated rooms, and treated rooms generally sound more flat and neutral than, say, your bedroom

 But still, a room will always have an impact on your sound, even with the most flat and neutral speakers. So basically, mixing with a very flat response is not something that's very easily available for most of us. Especially when you're recording and mixing at home, in your bedroom or in your music room, stuff like that. Proper monitors can cost a lot of money, and room treatment on top of that can also cost you a lot of money

And also, the sound of your mixes will change drastically when you take them elsewhere

Steven Slate Audio VSX Review! (Magic Mixing Headphones??!!)

Unfortunately, Steven Slate Audio doesn't prioritize compatibility issues when operating systems get updated. So, you may experience one or more months of downtime when a major revision happens. As of this writing, for example, the most recent Mac OS isn't supported at all, so the modeling plugin won't load (making this a very very expensive set of routine headphones). Worse yet, Steven Slate Audio doesn't update its product description to let you know about compatibility problems before you buy, or once you own them

 I have this holiday by my band drag under that I mixed and I'm very familiar with how this mix sounds and we are going to check out the VSX plugin, which comes free when you buy the VSX headphones. Now this a plugin would go on very last in your plugin chain on your two bus. So I have this on my master bus. It's the very last thing that I have before it hits my speakers or my headphones in this case

Trying Slate VSX Headphones!

The headphones have a design flaw in the headband. My second pair started developing hairline cracks right where the first ones broke. I've been sort of promised a replacement in April but was given the same info after the first pair. I was enjoying them before they broke

 Today we'll see if VSX can dethrone my 650s and become my new go-to headphones for mixing and mastering. What is VSX? VSX is one-part headphones designed as closed back with beryllium drivers. They include Slate's patent-pending technology called Acoustic Ported Subsonics or APS which they say delivers an unrivaled low end by harnessing the air pressure to supercharged low frequencies. The other component of VSX is the software which they say when combined with the headphones creates a brutally honest virtual studio monitoring solution

 Let's look at a couple of the problems VSX attempts to solve. First up music makers working in untreated rooms. To me the first and most obvious problem VSX aims to solve is the onslaught of music makers attempting to produce mix and even master with studio monitors in poorly treated or even completely untreated rooms. The cost to design build and treat an acoustically sound control room can be a daunting task especially when you're trying to turn a bedroom a space that sounded all designed to be a studio into a studio

 Number one they're open back cans and they're not as good in loud environments. If I'm on a plane or traveling with my family it's just not possible to mix with all the noise. Number two they're only one source which is something that often causes me to reminisce working in my professionally treated studios where it's a click of a button to sample between multiple sets of studio monitors. Third the low end is not that great which means I have to make sure I have a sub pack nearby or risk spending hours going back and forth to my car to check mixes against reference tracks
