* Lamy Safari - Once more a very simple pen, sure they have a preparatory converter but that can be offset by how easy the nibs are to change. Seriously if you don't like the nib on one pull it off get a new one and slip it on, simple as. It will allow you to try a variety of different sized nibs to discover which best suits you.

* Conklin - Another one which suffers from quality control issues, if a beginner bought one of these i wouldn't be surprised if they never went back to fountain pens. Both of mine have had issues.

* Parker Vector - It's simple, it's cheap, its pretty reliable. This is the pen which a lot of people who learn how to use fountain pens in school use.

But it would be nice to know what fountain pen brands have flaws that would make them bad for a beginner (or anyone in general). I have heard of some brands having quality control issues, so anymore information similar to that would be very helpful.

 So this lower pen. This is the exact model and finish that I purchased when I was 10 years old back in 1980. Whatever it was for 399 at the News Center in the Colonial Park Mall in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This is the Rejuvenated Parker Vector

Well, hello today! I'd like to give you my first impressions of the Parker Vector Xl. Now, before we dive into the pen, I just want to point out that, uh, there are several Parkers out that Parker Vectors out there. So I just want to be clear that this is the Parker Vector Xl, which is a apparently a newer model. I was surprised to stumble across it

 So when I do my editorial part of this video, I will have finished this fill and started a new one. and I'll let you know about the skipping if it's still an issue or if it's just, uh, you know, Waski squirrel should have cleaned out his pen before he started writing with it. First Impressions - Parker Vector XL

Platinum Preppy (cheap, smooth, and all round reliable. Can be eyedropper converted eventually if interested).

Pilot Metropolitan (finer nib point options with a sturdy body, nibs can easily be swapped out next time just buying the cheap plumix instead).

What is a good starter pen?

While looking for a replacement, I found out about Pilot VPs, bought one, and have been using it ever since. Here's why I'm not going back to cheaper pens for work:

I have (among several others) a Sheaffer VFM Fountain pen,and it feels as smooth as I can imagine a pen to be. It looks great, and feels great. 

So, my question is, what does a, say, Kaweco Sport (I know that costlier ones exist. Just taking this ad an example.), have, that is worth more than 10 times my Sheaffer? I agree it looks good, a different kind of good, than the Sheaffer, but I like it. But, I think there should be more solid reason for the higher price.

What do you get with costlier pens?

Parker Quink Black and Blueblack - because they're just gray with different undertones and I used to hate their shading. After a couple years I've developed a love for shading, so "black" became my favourite daily "work-appropriate" ink.

I have a couple of examples of this.  

1.  Noodlers walnut ink.  When I got it, I just thought it was a boring brown ink.  As I tried more inks and developed my taste in writing with new inks, it’s a favorite now.  Whenever I don’t know what ink to put in a pen, I always go to walnut.  

2. Lamy al-star.  When I purchased it on vacation in Vancouver (shout out to Vancouver pen shop) I was excited to try out the pen.  Turns out it had a terrible nib.   Scratchy to high heaven.  I finally swapped out the nib last year and now it is one of my favorite pens.  It tends to hurt my carpal tunnel, though so I usually only use it for a fill or two before I give it a rest. 

3. Parker vector.  I bought it because I am considering a Parker sonnet as a graduation present to myself.  It is dry as the California desert I live in (we got less than an inch of rain this last year, so pretty dry!).  After letting it sit for months (and even tossing it in the bin once, later retrieving it) I got the idea to put 54th mass in it, the wettest ink I own that I hardly use because it’s a bit unruly.  Well, that did the trick.  It made the pen useable, and the ink behave much much better.  Now it’s a combo I keep around a lot for official document signing and all that jazz.  When a colored (or sparkle) ink isn’t appropriate.  

What about you?   Have anything in the pen world that you hated when you got it and now is a treasured possession?

The Sonnet is intended to be a gift pen covering the low to mid market, but it's so widely counterfeited, including in commercial supply chains, as to be assumed fake until proven otherwise.

Why are parkers hated?

The quality/price ratio is mediocre : whilst certainly not a bad pen, it's not worth the 17 € I paid for. A fairer price would be 12 €.

I highlighted two pens in the title, as I believe they're less common here, hence of more interest.

I mostly like a hefty pen, rotring rapid pro is a good weight. The weight of a tactile turn is kind of pushing it but I manage. The material is also a factor. At this point I've found that most aluminum pens do not have the weight and feel I desire

Looking through different types of pens, I found the BigIDesign pens that take hundreds of different refills. Seems like a great fit for testing out inks that I may want to stick to. However it nearly looks like the grip is of similar size as my fisher clutch, so maybe too big on the click models. Also the pens are stupid expensive in Canada through 3rd party resellers (at least the ones I found)

This being said, before I keep on splurging on my quest to find the right pen, I figured I also need to consider ink types / cartridges.
