Of course I don’t mean to attack anyone and their passion, I just want to hear some fresh opinions that aren’t heard all that often. I’ll lead the way with three lesser ones:

1. There’s a time and a place for fountain pens. I love all of my pens to death and using them always brightens my day, but for work purposes, most of the shitty paper I’m given can’t even handle anything bigger than an F nib with average ink. Just as much thought and passion went into ballpoint pens and in my opinion, they’re much better all-rounders, so purposefully trashing ballpoints makes this sub looks quite pretentious and elitist.

2. Kaweco makes _the_ ugliest fountain pens I have ever seen in my life, especially the sport. Oh god.

3. Where’s the fun in collecting TWSBI, Lamy, Kaweco or other pens just to have them in different colors? You could explore so many new brands, mechanisms or models with that money.

Again, no hate towards anyone, I just find it fun to hear from some of the people who might not see much representation in the sub.

What are your unpopular fountain pen opinions?

 So the design or filling mechanism has to be really compelling for me to reach out for that range of pens. I do have a TWSBI vac700r in Iris, which is a vac filler and has beautiful rainbow accents, even on the nib. And then small company hand made pens start at least at 100, so from there on we're going for excellent design or at-least-its-gold (regardless of whether the gold nib is intrinsically better than the steel nib--it's subjective at best). And then, if I push my 100 budget jussssst a little more, something like the Pilot E95s or decimo comes in my reach

I'm happy for anyone who derives joy from their pens no matter their price! I'm just curious because when I see mentions of 'grail pen' or even 'favorite daily drivers', a lot of pens I see are at $200+ range. There are the 'newbie' pens of course, but I don't see a whole lot of in between. Is it possible to feel satisfied that you don't need an 'upgrade' at below $100 range? Or is the hobby destined to take everyone to a higher and higher budget eventually, because more expensive pens are simply better writers? (I wouldn't actually know -- is this true? where's the intersection between good writing experience coming from the pen's functionality and its cap price limit?)

Anyone cap out at beneath $100?

I recently bought a TWSBI Vac700R in EF, and found that the TWSBI #6 EF nib is not as fine as the #5 EF. I was unhappy with it for a while but now I'm used to it. I can write finer lines if I focus on keeping the contact with the paper lighter, but it's still not as consistently fine as my Eco EF.

I decided to compare different EF nibs from different brands

I will say that it clearly asks to have the end cracked open to let air into the ink chamber - there’s no wondering - what’s going on here with ink flow? That’s how vacs work though so I’m ok with it - it writes smoothly and evenly, just wet enough with that ink and nib combination.

What's a good fountain pen for note-taking for a college student?

 It uses cartridges, but doesn’t come with a converter. The TWSBI Eco is a great pen that may be more than you are thinking of spending ($30) but is a really nice pen that could be a buy it once and done. It is only bottle fill, and that adds about $10 for ink, but the pen is great and hold a lot of ink. Depending on your use this can be a factor

I am pretty new to fountain pens. I bought some disposables and a Pilot Metropolitan at staples a few years back, but never finished a cartridge in any of them. All were very scratchy and the nibs were constantly gumming up with paper fiber. <p>Edit: Thanks for the help! Bought a pilot varsity, and after discovering the appeal of the pens, I have just ordered a Lamy safari. I still dont see myself ever spending more than 30 on a pen, but maybe I&#39;ll be sucked deeper into this hobby later on.</p>

Newcomer wanting to get into fountain pens, had a couple small questions

 Now writing with this pen is where I have my problems. I compared it to the Lamy Safari and Metropolitan Pilot which are both cheaper than the TWSBI ECO and both write several orders of magnitude smoother than the TWSBI ECO. This pen is incredibly scratchy and this was directly comparing to the other 2 pens with 2 different inks. Carbon Ink Black and Waterman Serenity Blue

Better value out there.

I really like Lamy Safari and Al-Star because they force me to correct my grip. But for longer periods, I like my TWSBI Eco! I rotate the three because my grip is slightly different with each, and that seems to help with hand fatigue.

For the students &amp; teachers out there. What are you preferred pens for long form note taking &amp; study writing sessions. Getting hand fatigue after writing a page with my current pens. Wish to avoid going back to gel pens.

UPDATE March 2019: After over a year of using this pen, I'm my review from 4 to 5 stars. Ink flow is very smooth, and even the slight feedback this extra-fine nib had while writing/sketching is pretty much smoothed out as well. This plastic body is built like a tank; threw it around in all my bags along with keys and phones and everything and there's not a single scratch on it. The massive ink reservoir is also really, really handy for travel and on the go, as I hardly ever have to refill, and the clear body makes it incredibly easy to see when the ink is getting low

Here's hoping it lasts for years to come!  The only other fountain pen I purchased before this was a Pilot Metropolitan Fine Nib, and this was a very nice upgrade! I've heard that fountain pens with piston mechanisms are difficult to clean, but this one definitely wasn't. Just take a cup of water, dip the empty pen in, and twist the piston up and down a few times

I really really enjoy writing with this pen. I got a Pilot Metropolitan last year so when I initially picked this one up, I was a little put off by how light it felt in comparison. but after a few weeks of using it I'm super happy with the weight difference - this one really glides across the page (in a Clairefontaine notebook) and it's really nice to be able to switch between a lighter pen and a weightier one. it is also of course very cool & useful to see how much ink is left in the pen

This pen (TWSBI ECO) is fantastic! Easy to fill, easy to clean, nice plastic case with included tool, liquid silicone sealer and pictured instructions on pen care. Overall thrilled with this purchase and would purchase another in a minute. Highly recommended.

A Fantastic Pen!

I have bought a total of 5 of these pens in my life, and I’ll buy them until they stop making them. They are extremely convenient - they never dry out, never leak, and although I’ve broken two of them due to my own carelessness, I consider these pens to be some of the most durable low cost pens on this site. I hope they never stop making them because I will never stop buying them.
