 Not as comfortable as the HD 599, but that's that's a high benchmark I think but it's almost there, so that's that's good praise. I think in terms of build though, they don't inspire confidence with they're light and flexible plastic construction, especially versus the competition from the likes of Sin Iser and Bayer Dynamic. However, features like the removable cable and mini XLR connector are most welcome Now if you want durable the same ear. In fact, even at the cheaper UK price I Do it back better

 However, the foam is much deeper and it's a firmer memory foam unlike the soft and shallow pads that you're going to find on a bed. And it's much more enjoyable on the K 712 than it is on the 650. In fact, it's pretty excellent based performance for an open backed dynamic headphone without over running into and muddying up the low mids like on the X 2. AKG K712 Pro - Review

* AKG K712 Pro - Have heard a lot about them, however they seem to be shadowed over and not talked about nearly as much as other headphones of this price range in todays climate. I've been gravitating towards them due to what I've heard about there impressive sound staging and imaging, which would be a nice switch from the infamously narrow and intimate soundstage of the HD600.

 The first thing I actually noticed was the lack of separation between instruments & lack of dimensionality in general.  I called AKG America to talk with a tech to see if there was any need to break them in, they said no, they should sound good right out of the box. He was supposed to send me the email to tech support (never got it) in Austria b/c I asked to speak with someone (a true sound engineer) who could tell me definitively what was going on with these headphones and how could these be considered pro reference phones.  And as a lesson, reviews are only so useful

 If you did you'd end up making everything too bright. I could not even hear the top end of acoustic guitars. The first thing I actually noticed was the lack of separation between instruments & lack of dimensionality in general. As a long time AKG Studio Headphone user I was shocked when I first put these on and immediately checked them against my other AKG headphones (AKG K271 Studio, AKG K240DF) and my Sennheiser HD 280 Pro & HD 535.  This is the second from the top of the line, AKG Studio Reference, Mastering level headphone and it absolutely does not cut it. The simplest thing I can say is there is a "veiled" sound across the entire frequency spectrum. I can't imagine attempting to EQ let alone Master something with these headphones

 The orange headphone cable seems to be well made and robust (they give you an orange one and another that's black/curl/contracting type) with a adaptor/connector on the end that can be either 1/4" of 1/8".  There didn't seem to be any reason to continue testing (knew immediately, but didn't want to believe an AKG Flagship headphone could sound like this) or question what I was hearing, the K712's went right back in the box and are being returned. For the price paid these are not even in the realm of what I expected. AKG needs to go back to the drawing board on this headphone

Shockingly Disappointed

I am currently using the Hyperx revolver and am looking to upgrade in time for the new console gen. Budget would be under 500. On a side note I would prefer it to have comfortable, plush ear cups and not the terrible cheap ones that touch the ears that are found on so many cheap gaming headsets.

Best audiophile headphones for gaming?

 They always sound like they are on the edge of distortion but if you give it more volume, they still don't distort or become too bright. The bass does hit on bass heavy tracks but I prefer an underlying bass presence. I don't like the two cords it comes with. They are really a very decent pair of headphones but I just don't think they belong in this price range

 There are so many other great headphones for this kind of money! I think I would have kept them if they were about $175 but definitely not the mid $300 range. I hope this helps someone make the right decision!

These headphones are probably very good for gaming but I bought them for music listening. They look and feel very cheaply made but actually I think they could take a beating. Extremely comfortable self fitting headband and some of the best velour ear cups I have ever worn. My problem is the sound

I have been looking into getting something to complement my HD650. Today I bought precisely that, which amounts to the AKG K712 Pro.

My first impressions are somewhat mixed.

I like their look a fair bit. The cable being located towards the front of the earcup is not great for aesthetics, but whatever. The single cable connection is convenient, although it may be worse for lognevity than individual connections to each earcup. As far as comfort goes, it's good for me. No issues whatsoever and the adjustment mechanism is easy and quick as it simply expands as it may need to.

On the other hand, build quality is not so great. The tubes that go over the headband and such feel very cheap (reminds me of a really cheap Chinese no-name gaming headset I had some years ago). The headband itself is fine, however. There is some more cheap clear plastic connecting to the headband, though. The plastic on the earcups themselves also feel noticeably cheaper than the plastic used in my HD650. It's not awful by any means, but it isn't great.

The sound is a lot more impressive than the build, however, at least according to my current observations. It's quite different from the HD650. It's not as warm and lacks the natural tonality of the HD650. However, the purpose of these is to be more analytical, so this makes sense. So what are my thoughts? For the 200€ I paid for them, they don't seem bad at all. I'll need to keep using them and see how they hold up in not just sound, but also durability.

Edit: Adding onto my observations, I have noticed that in Rocket League for example the boosting sounds are less clearly separated from the background music with the K712 than they are with the HD650. I think it has to do with the less warm tuning of the AKGs. Also, after some gaming, I can confirm that the imaging is indeed great on both headphones. Some people talk about a three blob effect on the HD650s, but I can clearly pinpoint sounds from any direction and I always have been able to, so that clearly isn't the case for me. The soundstage is also big enough for me to tell the distance of enemies on a game map, so I don't see a competitive advantage in the AKGs' bigger soundstage. However, what I have noticed is that their imaging allows me to pinpoint enemies just as well and the larger soundstage helps a lot with immersing me into larger worlds. Also, while the AKG seems to be a bit easier to run than the HD650, it's far less forgiving of weaker sources. With my HD650 I can get good sound from my NW-A55 (although at max. volume), the AKG gets completely screwed. My Fiio E10K runs both fine, though I have also ordered a K5 Pro.

I own a pair of AkG K712 and a K702.
I don't feel them "cheap", I feel them "light".
(I know what quality and stiffness looks like, I own Beyerdynamic dt990 and dt1990)
They don't fall on the ground, they float towards the ground, usually since the cable weights more than the cans.
Everything is made to have a light pair of headphones.
The arc on top is metal covered with plastic, actually it's used in the place of a cable to move the right channel toward the right ear.
Pretty genius, if you ask me.
The floating ear mechanism, the no-hinge mechanism, almost no screws... Everything is done toward lightness.

Easy to change pads, no need to regulate on your head.

No folding, btw.
And they are massive.

I really love them, you actually forgot to have them on your head after 10 seconds.
They sounds good, just a little lacking on basses... basses are there, you know it, but they don't kick at all.

But AkG are gentle on my head, on my ears and on my pocket too (in Europe, they costs like 200 EUR).

Welp, got myself a new boi.

 I'd rather have a flatter pair of headphones I can use more often.  The poor EQing on these makes music much less enjoyable, and I consider them to be unusable for mixing or mastering music.  I barely games with them, but they might be great for gaming, if you like a looser fitting headphone. Just don't get these for professional audio work

COMFORT First things first. In my opinion these things have way too loose of a fit. Compared to Sennheiser 650s, which are snug and somewhat tight, these feel more like they'll fall off my head.  SOUND These headphones tend to have a massive dip in the upper mids

After buying and trying around multiple pairs of headphones I'm finally glad to find a pair I love. Others I tried: Astro A40s, Sennheiser HD660S, Hifiman Sundara, AKG K712 Pro, DT 880 Pro 250ohm, DT 880 Edition 600ohm. Ok that's only 6 lol. They sound amazing (so do some of the others) but don't compromise on comfort over long periods, have plenty of bass and I've always like the look of them

 They have severe bass roll off so they alter the intention of EDM and rock music. They're great if you're trying to pick apart vocals and separation but I couldn't tolerate them sucking any fun out of listening. I've read that these are more "bassy" than the 701/702.

The rest of my listening is done with FLACs. Anyway, the K5 Pro really helped to bring the AKG K712's to life and the result is a much more dynamic performance with an improved soundstage and a slightly beefier low-end which is much appreciated on the K712's. The K5 Pro is also quite a versatile unit at its price point, offering you optical and coaxial inputs and RCA inputs and outputs.
