 I think Santini does that, but also for example, Magna Carta has interesting stainless steel number eight nibs. Most number eight nibs are gold and therefore quite expensive, so I find it very interesting that there now is a very inexpensive alternative for people who would like to try a number eight nib, bigger nib and see what that is like. I hope you'll forgive me this lengthy introduction, I always get the comment that I ramble, I try to be really to the point, but I do think this warranted a little bit of exposition as we say. Now, I'm going to cover the parts of the pen, I will do a writing sample and I'll tell you what I like about it, what I don't like about it

 In other words, very interesting because really in my mind, the number eight nibs available now are Bok, the Bok 380 nibs. We think about it, there are other companies that make, used to make number eight nibs, like say Yovo, but as far as I know, Yovo no longer produces them or there are companies who make bigger nibs in house. I think Santini does that, but also for example, Magna Carta has interesting stainless steel number eight nibs. Most number eight nibs are gold and therefore quite expensive, so I find it very interesting that there now is a very inexpensive alternative for people who would like to try a number eight nib, bigger nib and see what that is like

I mean for under $10, a number 8 nib, that's unheard of, I don't know of any other brand out there, pen brand that would get you a number 8 nib for under 10 bucks. Is it a perfect nib? No it is not, mine is dry, I did a little bit of probing online and some people really love their pen, but I've definitely heard some complaints that yeah, mine is dry too, so I think it is a thing. Fortunately dryness is relatively easy to fix by spreading the tines a little bit, you have to be a little careful, you don't min anything out of shape, but if you're willing to make a bit of effort, read up on that, maybe watch some videos on that, you can do that yourself with relative ease, so it shouldn't be too big of an issue

 Done. You know what? I think it's nice, it works well, it looks good, it's simple, black resin, simple pen but it looks good, it feels good, everything is rounded off nicely, there are no sharp edges or corners that I can find, even the threads I find very comfortable, nicely rounded off. And the number 8 nib, well that's just fun, it's something different, it's something that I have not seen on a Chinese pen before, maybe they exist, but I've just not seen them, for me this was the first exposure to these new number 8 nibs coming out of China. I think it's a lot of fun, it's affordable and that I think is the biggest selling point of many of the Jinhao pens, not all of them, they make some pens that are a bit more expensive, but I mean, I paid $9

Affordable But That's It

 I mean, it doesn't need to be metal. It doesn't need to have this hideous little logo on here, and it certainly should have a number eight nib. And they really addressed all three of those things with this one. So if you're looking for a 149 clone, and it is a 149 clone, it is not a counterfeit

 This is a genuine Montblanc 149 with the Montblanc number eight size nib. Now, this particular one is 14KGP. If you were to buy a new one today, it would be 18KGP, but again, like I said, this is an older one. During the period that this pen was made, this pen featured a 14KGP nib unless it was one of the very small number of pens meant for export to France

 They need to get rid of the shield logo. They need to make it plastic or acrylic, and they need to take this very underwhelming number six nib, which is the same number six nib that's on a million Jinhao pens, and replace it with a number eight size nib. They did that on this pen. They got rid of that shield logo, they made it a plastic pen, and they came out with a number eight size nib, which looks and writes quite nicely, as we'll see

 France requirements in order to be called solid gold has to be a minimum of 18KGP. So the nibs made for the French market were 18KGP. The nibs made for everywhere else in the world were 14KGP during this era. If you were to go to store right now and buy a new Montblanc 149, it would be an 18KGP nib, but not from this era, but this is the size of the nib has not changed

The body is a light plastic so it’s not like an authentic heavier weighted fountain pen. Ink does not come with it. But after filling it up with the extractor it came with it wrote fine for my ability.

Arrived as timed. Worked for me.

 And I think they've done a pretty good job of it. The engraving is standard Jinhao. They didn't break out in any way on the design of the nib. So that is just a Jinhao design blown up on the Xerox

 Now that is both a strength and a weaknesses. This number eight nib is, as far as I know, the first that Jinhao has done. And I think they've done a pretty good job of it. The engraving is standard Jinhao

 It is a cartridge converter pen. This updates that pen and gives you what I think is actually a better option. This is a plastic or a resin pen with a more subtle clip, still cartridge converter, but, with a number 8 steel nib, the first, as far as I know, from Jinhao. And how does it write? I think you're going to be interested in that part of the review, and not just because of the number 8 nib, but because of the way the change in weight and material makes this, to me, a more usable fountain pen

 So for some, that's a bit much, but it's right at three turns to get that off. Now when you do, you are rewarded for your efforts. You will notice that this has now become a plastic grip section, which more closely resembles the Mont Blanc pen that this draws its design language from. The old one had metal threads and then a completely different grip section with a metal trim ring at the end and, of course, a number six nib, which suddenly, suddenly seems smaller than it used to

 Three turns to uncap a pen, especially one as large as this, is a real functional flaw in the design. And Jinhao listened, because now it only takes one, two, two and a bit full rotations to uncap the pen. And since it's obvious that Jinhao is watching these YouTube reviews and listening to feedback, listen up Jinhao, we want an X159 piston filler and a number eight size medium nib. Thank you for listening

 Yes, he dipped a fountain pen because if you had a Mont Blanc, you wouldn't want to fill it up with document ink either. And I'm sure he's a billionaire, so he can probably buy 10, 15 of these things, but don't you think he has a pen that he loves and he has it in his jacket pocket, ready to use? And if you tried to sign a document that's going to be permanent for hundreds of years with your signature, Charles III, the first time maybe he signed as King, wouldn't you want the ink wells and a box of Pilot V pens to be outside of your arm's length and not put in front of your document so that you might have an inky accident? I think all those things are reasonable. So let's just back up and give the man some space, rant off. And after all that hullabaloo, I forgot to mention what the ink was in the pen

 But first, let's look at what changed between the first X159 and this updated version. The original was only available with black and chrome hardware and a chrome-fine nib. Now there are three new finish options, all with gold trim, maroon, black, and dark blue. And the nib is now in a two-tone gold and chrome, fine, and available in extra fine as well, number eight size nib

 I don't know where else you can find a number eight size steel nib on any pen for this price. And if Jinhao comes out with a number eight nib in medium, I'll be all over it like a on a Mars bar. And there you have it, a real possibility for the top 10 pens of 2022.  Stay tuned. So I think it'd be good to compare all the different components that go into a nib assembly, obviously the nib, the feed, and the nib collar. Putting a number 8 nib, it's the first time I think Jinhao has done that, or any Chinese main manufacturer has done that. It certainly fits well in the hand without posting, and you may ask, does it post? And the answer is yes, it does

 We'll give you the dimensions of the section. It might be a little bit big for some people. It's about the biggest section in any pen that I have. So, let's put some more Waterman Serenity Blue Ink on paper, and then we'll do a final summation

 It certainly feels a little bit different on the paper than any other Jinhao nib that I have and that's a good sign. I'd say it's on the wet side and forget this one, the nib was on the paper, but it is a little bit soft, which is also surprising. No pressure, a little bit more pressure, a little bit more pressure. You know, not something you're going to want to do in everyday writing, but it certainly works well and that feed keeps up extremely well

 You know, it has a slight upturn at the end, and it's a little bit of a matte finish at the end, which I think is very nice, because your fingers now know when you're at the end of it. Here they put a ring of metal, but then there's a lot more metal in that original 159. So we're going to take a look at all the changes that they made to accommodate that number 8 nib. Then we're going to find a suitable ink and see how that fine number 8 nib writes

Jinhao has a new 159 model.  Not metal & a No. 8 size nib.  How does it write, watch & see.  I like it!!!
