 My next journal review of the mini DSP microphone itself. Now the mini DSP microphone, the UMIK-1 is kind of interesting because not only do they give you a calibration curve, they give you a calibration Excel spreadsheet. I have never used any room correction devices for 2.1 channel audio. I am going to attempt to tweak my system. My only experience with any correction is using Yamaha's YPAO for my 5.1 setup. Is the [UMIK-1](https://www.minidsp.com/products/acoustic-measurement/umik-1) with a driverless interface - plug and play acoustic measurement going to be sufficient or am I better off using a mini-dsp with room eq software? Thanks.

Room Correction Question

USB cable defective on receipt. No calibration file available from miniDSP website

 For the most part this isn't a problem because this is already a very high sound pressure level and it is absolutely fine for frequency response measurements. But for example if you want to measure the SPL capabilities of your subwoofer 120 dB SPL might not be enough. So keep that in mind. One thing I found very positive is how easy it is to use the UMIC-1

 This means that the microphone is equally sensitive to all frequencies. In a frequency response graph it would look like this. Expensive measurement microphones are very close to that and they of course do not need a calibration file. Now, even though the manufacturer of the UMiC 1 tries to make it as flat as possible, the frequency response will not be perfect and it might also differ slightly from mic to mic

 So you're pretty much stuck on 18 dB of gain. This means that you cannot measure signals which are louder than 120 dB SPL. For the most part this isn't a problem because this is already a very high sound pressure level and it is absolutely fine for frequency response measurements. But for example if you want to measure the SPL capabilities of your subwoofer 120 dB SPL might not be enough

 And this is where the calibration file comes in. The frequency response of each individual microphone is tested. This way the manufacturer can see by how much the microphone's response deviates from a totally flat response and can then create a calibration file that in combination with this microphone will lead to a flat frequency response. So, the calibration file essentially just contains the microphone's frequency response and you will see that the frequency response of the UMiC is not perfectly flat out of the box

I’m running a klipsh R-12sw. I’ve plugged the port (thank you smartwool socks), this has greatly improved the resolution of bass output. I’ve tweaked crossover levels and volume. 

I’m curious if there are other changes I can make to the unit to further improve sound. Stuffing the enclosure or upgrading the driver, etc. ? Naturally, when I bought the sub it was $499....

Subwoofer hack?

 The ECM800 $55, driver $45, phantom power $25 and last but not least hdmi $8 total of $133 dollars. The ecm8000 did a flat response, but again the sub was too lean until I went into Dirac and changed the sub settings which didn't sound the best. Not bad though. I was not happy with dirac so far

 I could send all the extra sh#$t for the ecm8000 back except the mic. If anyone has an emotiva $2500 processor or higher price. Get the umik-1. The emotiva mic was way too sensitive so when it runs dirac it wants to turn the sub way lean

Does better than expected!!!!

 Right now I've got the SVS Ultra Towers. We're going to pair that up with the SB16s as well as the PB16 Ultras and the Ultra Center. We're going to see how well SVS does and handles for home theater. I'm looking forward to getting the Denon hooked up and set up as well as in a few days we'll be installing the four Klipsch in-ceiling speakers for Dolby Atmos

 They've been using REW for several years and so I'm hoping that they can give me some great advice on how to set it up properly and how to use it to help better the sound here in my home theater. Well, with that said, let's go ahead and get to the unboxing. See what we have, so inside there's our USB microphone, let's go ahead and pull that out. So you can see right here is where we'll plug in the USB cable, put that aside

 And also today I received from SVS a pair of their PB16 Ultra subwoofers. Now over the next several videos we'll be doing unboxing of that as well and also I'll be comparing them directly with SVS' SB16. Well guys, that's going to wrap up this video. Hope you enjoyed it

Is DIRAC worth it?

 My system's sound has improved noticeably since I purchased this. If you're in a similar position, I cannot recommend this microphone enough. Excellent purchase!!!!

I've been using another brand of calibrated microphone for quite some when tuning my SQ car audio system with my DSP. It's been frustrating to say the least. With this microphone and the free REW (Room EQ Wizard) software available online, I've been able to make some major changes to my tune that I wasn't able to previously. This is hands-down the best money I've spent in a while in terms advancing the sound quality in my system
