I'm trying to find a post-beginners guide to fountain pens. An interest in started 14 years ago.

I have the Pilot Metropolitan, the Lamy Safari, the Majohn M2, and just ordered the TWISBI Eco.

What I want to know is, what's the next level of pen?

For the life of me I can't find a list for the $50-100 range.

It appears one in that level is the Lamy Studio, but I hear it doesn't offer anything more than looks.

The Pilot VP is also too much to justify at this point. So what's in-between and an upgrade between what I already have?

Is there a buyers guide for next level pens after beginner pens?

The Procyon is a good step up from the Preppy/Prefounte/Plaisir series of pens from Platinum. This is a mid-level fountain pen with a good nib and quality construction. The slip & seal cap system actually works as advertised, keeping the nib and ink supply from drying out over extended periods of time. I find that it writes well without feathering even on poor quality paper

Very good general use (everyday) fountain pen that travels well

Of course I don’t mean to attack anyone and their passion, I just want to hear some fresh opinions that aren’t heard all that often. I’ll lead the way with three lesser ones:

1. There’s a time and a place for fountain pens. I love all of my pens to death and using them always brightens my day, but for work purposes, most of the shitty paper I’m given can’t even handle anything bigger than an F nib with average ink. Just as much thought and passion went into ballpoint pens and in my opinion, they’re much better all-rounders, so purposefully trashing ballpoints makes this sub looks quite pretentious and elitist.

2. Kaweco makes _the_ ugliest fountain pens I have ever seen in my life, especially the sport. Oh god.

3. Where’s the fun in collecting TWSBI, Lamy, Kaweco or other pens just to have them in different colors? You could explore so many new brands, mechanisms or models with that money.

Again, no hate towards anyone, I just find it fun to hear from some of the people who might not see much representation in the sub.

This could be my one and only fountain pen.

For good feedbacky nibs in a “reasonable” price range I’d look at the Platinum Procyon and Sailor Procolor. You want medium to match your western fine.

I got a twsbi eco about a year ago as my first fountain pen. The nib on it is odd. It can write with a feedback which almost feels like a pencil, which I love, but as soon as I turn the page it has a horrible draggy bogged down sort of feel to it. There is no pattern or logic as to when it will do which. Anyway, I really love the pencil-like feedback but I haven’t really found a nib since then that can display it. Do any of you know a western fine size nib that has a feedback that sort of feels like a pencil?
