 I view two ways of looking at this lens those of you that are looking for small and light don't mind that the Tamron is 28 instead of 24 millimeters the Tamron might be a better choice for you because if you're working off of a gimbal or you know your weight matters in your situation it is several hundred grams heavier and you might notice that it is also much bulkier when it comes to fitting into storage for the simple case that it is a wider lens and diameter and the lens hood itself is also considerably wider and so at the end of the day it's a fairly big footprint right there but if size is not so much of an issue the fact that it does go to 24 millimeters I would prefer the four extra millimeters on the wide end and then I do the five millimeters on the long end and it's in some situations you can always crop in to get closer you don't always have the option of stepping back further and so it is very valuable when it comes to that. The second way to look at this if you're considering a 24 to 70 millimeter and you're comparing the Sigma to the GM lens. The GM lens which I have reviewed has very few advantages that I can perceive compared to the Sigma and it's hard to justify spending twice as much for it and so I think Sigma has done a good job of positioning this lens where it needs to be to where it is going to be attractive to people when it comes to the price to performance ratio.  The only focus liability that I ran into is that when trying to shoot up close I found that a lot of times the lens was just reluctant to focus closely and so that is you know kind of the area that sometimes separates on Sony I found the best lenses from the lenses that maybe need a firmware update and that's in that really close focus capability and so there were some areas where I just found the lens balky to focus where I wanted it to. The Tamron 28-75 was similar when it came out there was a firmware update that came that fixed that problem I see no reason why Sigma couldn't do the same here but overall my autofocus performance was good it focused well also in low light situations and even in near dark conditions it locked on quite quickly and accurately and so you know definitely more good than bad when it came to that. When it comes to the image quality performance image quality is actually really strong there is some pronounced barrel distortion at 24 millimeters and then there are more mild levels of pincushion distortion throughout the rest of the range there is definitely some vignette that persists throughout the zoom range so you'll just have to watch out for that fortunately it will be corrected in camera for either jpegs or video there's not yet a profile and at least the Adobe products that I use for software for correction I'm sure that that will come down the road. Beyond that it has very very good performance I found when comparing it to the Tamron which is very popular that the Tamron had similar levels of performance in the center of the frame the Sigma sometimes had a little bit of an edge out at the corner the periphery of the frame at 50 millimeters was the place where the Tamron was strongest versus the Sigma

 At the same time it does come with a thorough amount of weather sealing gasket at the lens mount a coating on the front element to help to resist dust and moisture. In terms of the autofocus performance I found autofocus performance to be very good and so it focuses quickly it focuses quietly and it focuses accurately particularly when you're using things like IAF either for humans or pets I got a perfect performance not one missed shot over the course of my review. Finally joined the alpha club and got the a7iii. What's a must have lens?

Great all-round lens for the price

 The Sigma feels really good in the hands. Sigma has done a fantastic job with their art lenses. Now this is a native lens for the Sony E-mount camera. It's not adapted, it is native because Sony has opened up their mount to allow companies like Sigma and Tamron to have all of the technology that they don't have to reverse engineer to then have it work seamlessly on whatever camera it is from Sony that you put it on

 Now moving on to the next shot, I wanted to zoom into 70 millimeters. It's not the greatest picture in the world but I wanted to give you a wider shot at 24 and I wanted to give you a zoomed out all the way at 70 millimeters at 2.8 just so that you can zoom in and see a little bit of the separation between the background because look the sofa is going slightly out of focus and the wall is going slightly out of focus as well. Now we move outside to give you some 100 ISO images and this is Danny DeVito backstage where we were waiting for Bernie to go and do the campaign rally and obviously AOC to do the rally

 This lens isn't even out yet at the time of recording this, yet the pre-orders are massive and we're going to find out why during this review. So how did I test out this lens? I took it into multiple real world situations to get sample RAW files that of course you can download and pixel peep to your heart's content. I photographed Michael Rappaport at Helium Comedy Club in Philly doing one of his comedy sets. I had some backstage and on stage access

1250th of a second at 2.8, 100 ISO. The colors and tones and the clarity of everything that I got out of the Sigma was fantastic. In the last two images I was able to get up on a ladder that was set up in the back so that I can show you the massive people that were there

8 DG DNR has been out for a while now and it is still one of the best if not the best option in this category for Sony E and L mount cameras. A lot of people buying new full frame cameras are left with the dilemma. Which lens is the best for me? In my opinion this is the perfect choice when you want to shoot a bit of everything and want that pro quality and feel straight out of the box. In this video I am pairing it specifically with my new Sony a7 IV to show you why this lens is very special

 This is not entirely true as with all the zooms you get the zoom compression when the background seems closer to the subject than it really is and also more blurred when zooming in. This lens delivers incredible results. I shoot with a lot of lenses constantly for the reviews here on my channel and as well as professionally and as soon as I put this on my camera I am every single time wowed. There is just something special in how good the lens renders the colors, how sharp the images are, even wide open

 Tamron new version of their 28-75mm lens is £200 or $300 cheaper than this, it is also lighter. Is the extra 5mm at the zoom end and 4mm less at the wider end worth this much more money? Maybe not for everyone but for some who need as much wide angle as possible on the standard zoom this could be no brainer. Also some people including me sometimes prefer their extra weight especially when filming handheld to give you that extra stability. I personally don't think that the price difference is that huge and only you can decide if 24-70mm is the right focal range for you

Never buying third party lenses again

 Only con I would say is that is it just slightly heavy on the a7riii but not too bad when using 2 hands. Other than that, great lens all around for the price and would definitely recommend.

A must have lens for the Sony a7riii, just as good as a Sony Master for half the cost. The auto focus is fast but not as fast as a G Master (couple of milliseconds behind but not a big deal) on the a7riii. The zoom is good enough for me on wide shots as I get great photos with it every time. I got a 82mm UV Filter Circular lens for it for all my car and outside pics which gives it that extra sharpness in my opinion (see my untouched RAW file pictures for examples)

8, again those stopped down to f4 or f5.6 to see that reduced. So, overall, it's a somewhat weak performance for distortion and vignetting here, you should definitely leave those automatic corrections turned on. Next, close-up image quality

At the widest angle of 24mm, this lens can get you as close as an amazing 18cm to your subject for some very dramatic images, and close-up image quality at 24mm is pretty sharp in the middle of your images, straight from f2.8, although there is just a little hint of longitudinal chromatic aberration

8 DG DN isn't quite perfect. It has some hidden issues with distortion and close-up image quality at 70mm. But when you think of all its strengths, the solid build quality, that fantastic resolution and contrast, its dramatic close-up images at 24mm and its pretty bokeh, it has to come highly recommended.
