CIRCULAR APERTURE
When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. ED (EXTRA-LOW DISPERSION) GLASS
As focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. Super ED glass provides enhanced compensation for chromatic aberration.

ASPHERICAL LENS ELEMENTS
Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. Hey everybody! I am an amateur hobbyist photographer using a Sony A6000, and I'd like to buy my first (secondhand) telephoto lens so that I can experiment with showing scale on an upcoming trip to Guatemala. I'd like to spend under $300 and upon looking at my options on Ebay, it's pretty clear that I'll probably need to go "vintage" (by which I really just mean pre-owned SLR/DSLR lens) and get an E-mount adapter if I want to stay in that price range.

Ideally I'm looking for an 80-200mm (ish) lens, although my only hard requirement there is that I can get up to 200mm (not *really* looking for a prime but might be open to the right one). I'm fine with f/4 but of course a higher aperture in my price range would be great! I've accepted that I'm probably stuck with manual focus here but honestly I should improve on that anyway, and my trip isn't until the end of July so I'll have plenty of time to practice.

One other thing, my camera is not full frame but from what I'm reading I think I would still be okay with a full frame lens at longer focal lengths? Any insight into the general compatibility of SLR lenses with mirrorless camera bodies would be helpful as well.

Since I'm so new to photography, the world of pre-mirrorless cameras and lenses is so foreign to me. I have no idea where to begin looking for a quality lens within these specs--there seems to be quite a lot of junky crap out there! Any and all suggestions are very much welcome, thank you!

Suggestions for "vintage" telephoto zoom lens?

 If you want a telezoom that captures more light and delivers tack sharp results when its iris is wide open, you'll need to spend more money.

6 OSS isn't a great performer beyond 55mm when shot wide open. If you're looking for a telezoom that gets solid results at its maximum aperture, the FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 and FE 70-200mm F4 are both better choices, but also cost upward of $1,000

 The more expensive 70-300mm does a bit better, projecting images at 1:3 at its closest focus and longest focal length.

Sony E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS Review

Coming from the Canon DSLR system, I am used to the stellar optics of its value telephoto lens: EFS 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM. So when I bought the Sony 55-210mm, I had already known that it would not live up to my high expectation. I did not want to invest in those >$1K FE telephoto lenses as I wasn't sure about switching totally from Canon to Sony

 Its build quality is pretty decent with its metal body and metal mount instead of plastic. OSS image stablization works reasonably well on my A6000 and it 's quiet. If you don't have high expectation, this would be the lens for your telephoto need. Otherwise, go ahead and spend your hard earn money on the FE 70-200mm F4 or FE 70-300mm

 But I eventually stick with Sony because of its great CMOS sensor for high ISO.  When Amazon Warehouse deal had some inventory of the 55-210mm for a reasonable price, I took the plunge. I wanted to downside my gear for travel and with the 55-210mm I might also be able to sneak that into indoor concerts. My Canon 7D Mark2 and 5D Mark2 DSLR are just too bulky and less discreet

 You could pick one up from Canon refurbished store at about $149 with 1 year warranty if you happen to own a Canon DSLR. The lowest I have seen on the Sony 55-210mm brand news is still about $200 and it's slower and less sharp. However, if your intention is for casual use, it does it job. I think it would be alright for 4K video recording as well as the lens only needs to resolve up to about 8 megapixels

 And even then, I've shot on bigger zoom lenses that only took 1.5 rotations. It is not good for "run and gun" shooting where you have to be on point with focus consistently. Also not good for non-tripod shooting

 I also like how small and light it is. I travel and hike/boat/ATV/run for a lot of shoots, so size and weight are always factors.

I know this is a cheaper lens, so I am reviewing this with that in mind. It is great for a quick fix that I needed it for until I can afford something better, but there are some major issues for the type of shooting I do that I've noticed.  The worst part is that the focus ring is indefinite. It takes 2-3 full rotations to fully go from one focus point to the next, which should only be an issue on bigger zoom lenses

Decent, but not great

I have used the Sony A6000 camera with all lenses mentioned here. I should first say that my copy of the 55-210mm has a de-centering problem, meaning the left side of the image is sharper than the right side. My comments on sharpness are based on getting acceptable results from the weaker side. Good things here are light weight, reasonable size, image stabilization and low cost

 Next I compared this lens to an old Minolta full-frame zoom that gives very good images. At 100mm, surprise again, no image difference between lenses. Above 100mm, however, things start to fall apart for the 55-210mm. At 135mm and 150mm, you can get acceptable edge sharpness out of this lens but you have to stop down hard, ie - f/11 or smaller

 If you're interested in this lens, I'd suggest you make sure you order it from some place that offers a good return policy, then you can make up your own mind whether or not it will work for your needs.

However, the a6000 is a sturdy workhorse and this lens comes no where close in terms of durability and quality. I'm a high-end consumer shooter without authoritative expertise, but I do know what a 50-200 lens can do and this one doesn't come close

 It's a good lens for your kid's baseball games, tourist photos and the like, but it's an improper match for the a6000. The construction is heavy duty plastic. You drop it and it's toast. This lens is also lethally allergic to water

 However, the a6000 is a sturdy workhorse and this lens comes no where close in terms of durability and quality. When you're looking for a C+ lens

I bought this for a trip to the serengetti , and was disappointed in the distance it was able to focus on. We were unable to see animals clearly from very far. The picture quality was great but only from closer distances.

It didnt seem to zoom in as far it claims.

The glass in this lens won't ever let you get sharply focused images. As always the smallest aperture gets the sharpest image , but its still not that great. The lower f-stops are quite soft at the plane of focus.

Optics are mediocre.
